COMBINATION-TOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 20, 1906.
Application filed September 9. 1905. Serial No. 277,742.
T0 at whont it may concern:
Be it known that I, JEFFERSON D. BARRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Waco, in the county of McLennan and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Tools; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in combinationtools.
My invention will be understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which the same parts are indicated by the same characters throughout the several views.
Figure 1 is a plan view" of the implement. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 shows a section along the line 3 3 of Fig. 1 and looking in the direction of the arrows. Fig. 4 shows a section along the line 4 4 of Fig. 1 and looking in the direction of the arrows, and Fig. 5 is a detail view of the knife.
The implement consists, primarily, of four parts, a frame or socket piece A, a sharpeningdisk B, a screw C, and an adjustable knife D.
The frame A is provided with a circular socket in its head, in which the disk B is mounted, which disk has sharpening edges 6 and may be rotated from time to time to furnish a fresh cutting edge and then clamped in any desired position bymeans of the clampscrew C. This head of the frame is provided with throats or notches 1 and 6, in which the edge of the knife to be sharpened is drawn, and the cutting edge 6 of the disk B sharpens the blade. The head of the frame is also provided with two lugs 2 and 5, having sharpening throats or notches 3 and 4 for scissor-blades. In order to steady the implements, as when sharpening large knives or hoes or other heavy tools, I provide an arm 7 with a boss 8, perforated, as at 9, for the insertion of a sup porting means. The shank 10 of this frame A is broadened, as at 11, and is provided with ribs 12 to engage the slots 13 in the knife D, which knife may be slid in or out along said ribs in the slot in the frame. The knife is made of a fiat blank with notches 13, which is passed between the notches 12 in the frame, and the head 01 is then bent over, as shown in Fig. 5. This knife is provided with a cutting edge 14 and a sharp point 15. The outer end 16 of the frame terminates in the prong 17, which is curved, as shown in Fig. 2.
In order to use the implement as a canopener, the prong 17 is forced vertically downward through the center of the top of the can, and then the knife D is slid in or out until the point 15 falls inside of the rim of the can, and then the ron 17 will serve as a pivot and the head of the frame A will serve as a lever, and a quick turn of the implement will cut a circular opening in the head of the can. The implement may also be used as a wrench for turning water-cocks, gascocks, dampers, nuts, or for other like purposes either by putting the notch between the lugs 2 and 5 over the water-cock or nut and using the arm 16 as a lever, or the slot between the ribs 12 may be used to engage the water-cock or nut, and thus a wrench with a shorter lever-arm is provided.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. In a combination-tool, the combination of a socket-piece, a handle, and a perforated arm, extending at right angles to said socketpiece, and a sharpening disk adjustably mounted in said socket-piece, said socketpiece being provided with a notch, one of the walls of which is radial, and the other wall inclined to a radius, substantially as described.
2. In a combination-tool, the combination of a socketpiece, a handle, and an adjustablymounted sharpening disk in said socketpiece, said socket-piece being provided with notches, the walls of one of which are paral: lel, and the walls of another of which are inclined to each other outwardly, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JEFFERSON D. BARRY.
