Description

(N0 Model.)
S. S. AUGHE.
DEVICE FOR LOOSENING SUGAR, &c.
No. 332,179. Patented Dec. 8, 1885.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SILAS S. AUGHE, OF DAYTON, OHIO.
DEVICE FOR LOOSENING SUGAR, 86C.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 332.179, dated December 8, 1885.
' Application filed May 19, 1885. Serial No. 166,008. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SILAS S. AUGHE, of Dayton, in the county of Montgomery, and in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Loosening Sugar, &c.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure l is a side elevation of my improved device, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the lower end of the same.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
My invention consists in the tool and the construction, arrangement, and combination of its parts, substantially as hereinafter specified, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the construction of my tool I preferably make the body A from square steel or iron, and at its lower end form or attach a screw-point, a, which resembles the point of a carpenters anger, but has a sharper pitch of its screw-thread and greater depth of thread. At its upper end is attached a handle, B; or, if preferred, said end may be adapted for insertion within a carpenters brace, the object sought being the easy rotation of said body, as in case of a gimlet or anger Fitted loosely upon the body A is a hub, C, which is adapted to slide lengthwise of the same, and is secured in place thereon by means of a radial set-screw, D. From opposite sides of said hub extend radially outward two arms or wings, c, which longitudinally are curved, and have their faces inclined transversely upon lines that have an angle of about forty-five degrees from the axis of said body. Each of said arms is provided with a longitudinal centrally-arranged slot, 0, and at its upper edge, near its outer end, has a lug, c, that extends forward a short distance.
Secured upon the face of each arm 0 is a correspondingly-curved blade, E, which has nearly twice the width and one-half greater length than the former, and is held in place thereon by means of a bolt, F, that passes through said blade and through the slot 0, and upon its rear threaded end has a washer, f, and nut f. In consequence of said slot said blade is adjustable radially within the limits of the same, while by the impingement of its upper edge upon the lug c said blade is steadied in position and prevented from getting out of line with said arm. The lower edge of each blade E is sharpened, and its outer end from such lower edge rounded up- Ward and outward and sharpened. The device is now complete, and is used by inserting the threaded point within the center of the contents of a box or barrel and then rotating the whole, so as to cause said point to move downward into the material and the blades to scrape or cut the latter until the same is thoroughly loosened. By means of the longitudinal adjustment afforded said blades the device may be adapted to packages having different dimensions, While the adjustment of said blades upon the body enables the tool to be adapted for use inpackages which are partly or entirely filled.
I do not claim herein as my invention an auger or a bit shank provided with a cutterblade adjustable with reference to the auger or bit shank, so that its operative or cutting part shall be nearer to farther from the out ter; or,broadly,a cutter-head adjustable upon a screw-pointed shank. Nor do I intend to cover, broadly, a shank formed with radial curved blades extending out from opposite sides thereof.
Having thus fully set forth the nature and hub, and the curved blades attached to the In testimonyr that I claim the foregoing I forward sides of-suoh arms,'-substantia11y as have hereunto set my'ha'ndthis 9th day 0f 10 and for the purpose described. May 1885; 3. The hub O and the arm 0, provided with 5 the longitudinal slot 0 and lug c",-in combination with the blade E on the forward side Witnesses:
of the arm, the bolt F, and the nut f, substan- JOE W. KENNEDY, tially as and for the purpose described; JOHN S. AUGHE.
SILAS S. AUGHE.
