Description

No. 812,610. PATENTED FEB. 13, 1906. L. STOESS.
CHIMNEY FOR INGANDESGENT GAS BURNERS.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 8, 1903.
FIGl.
UNITED STATES PATEN FFICE,
LOUIS sronss, or PENZIG, GERMANY.
CHIMNEY FOR INCANDESCENT GAS-BURNERS- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 13, 1906.
Application filed September 8,1903. Serial No. 172,256.
To ti/Z whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LOUIS SToEss, a subje'ct of the King of Prussia, German Emperor, residing at Penzig, in the Province of Silesia, Germany, have invented new and useful Improvements in Chimneys for Incandescent Gas-Burners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to lampchimneys made in two parts, the lower part fitting the usual chimney-holder on a lamp or gas-light and bein perforated to admit air to the flame an the upper part fitting snugly into or over a neck on the lower part; and the object of the invention is to provide a twopart chimney simple in construction and efficient in use admitting air directly to the flame of a lamp or gas-light.
My invention consists of a two-part chimney comprising a lower perforated portion adapted to be supported in the usual globe, shade, or chimney holder of a lamp or gaslight and a neck above the said perforation to receive the lower end of the upper part of the said chimney; and my invention consists of the improvement hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claim.
My invention will be more fully understood taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, and in which- Figures 1 and 6 show a two-part chimney in which the upper part fits over a neck of the lower part. Figs. 2 and 3 show a similar chimney having its upper part fitting inside the neck of the lower part, and Figs. 4, 5, and 7 show modified forms of chimneys in which the upper and lower parts are connected by a metal ring.
Referring now to the drawings for a further description of my invention, a is the lower portion of the two-part chimney and fitting into or over a holder generally provided on lamps or gas-lights. In an enlargement of this lower portion are provided openings d, which serve to admit air directly to the flame of the lamp, and above this enlargement is formed a neck 6, adapted to receive and hold the upper portion 1) of the chimney, which may be of any desired shape, the rim f fitting either outside the neck 6, as shown in Figs. 1 and 6, or inside the said neck 6, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, care being taken that the rim f does not obstruct the openings d of the lower portion a. If desired, a ring 0, of metal or other material, may be interposed between the neck of the lower portion and the rim of the upper portion to make a better connection between the two parts, as shown in Figs. 4, 5, and 7.
As before mentioned, the openings d are in the enlargement of the lower portion, which is superposed by the neck e of smaller diameter for the purpose of directing the incoming air toward the center of the chimney, whereby the briliancy of the flame is enhanced.
It will be understood that the necks and rims of the lower and upper parts are made of some standard diameters, so that the vari ous parts are interchangeable, and when one part becomes useless or broken it may be replaced without having to procure its complement part.
Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
In a lamp-chimney a lower portion, adapted to be supported by the gallery of a lamp and comprising an upper and a lower cylin drical neck of comparatively the same diame ter, a globular or other shaped enlargement between said necks, and openings in said enlargement for the admission of air, in combination with an upper portion comprising a globular or other shaped top and a rim fitting the upper neck of said lower portion, substantially as and for the purposes set forth In testimony whereof I have signed my nameto this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
LOUIS STOE SS.
