Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 30, 1906.
Application filed April 28, 1905. Serial No. 257.959.
To if/ZZ 'wl/1,0m, tt may concern,.-
Be it known that I, ELIZA ANNA WYoKorF, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stamford, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, an administratrix of the estate of Frank T. Wyckoff, deceased, late of said city, who did invent :new and useful Improvements in Knives for Auger-Bits, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in auger-bits,y more particularly that class for forming the longitudinal bore in pieces of wood, as in making pump-stocks or wooden water-pipes and the like.
It has for its obj ect more especially to facilitate the renewal of the bit proper, and to accomplish the same in a simple, expeditious, and effective manner, and the nature thereof consists of certain structural features substantially as hereinafter fully disclosed, and particularly pointed out by the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the preferred embodiment of the invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the bit proper' carrying head member, the clamp member and the retaining-nuts for the latter being all removed. Fig. 2 is a vertical section produced through the complete augerbit. Fig.` 3 is a detached perspective view of the bit proper. Fig. 4 is a like view of the bit proper clamp member viewed at angle to expose more especially the under side thereof. Fig. 5 is a like view of the clamp-bolt to aid the retention in place of the various removable parts above noted.
In the disclosure of this invention, provision is made for a hollow cylindric member or head 1 with preferably an interior screwthread thereon to provide for its attachment to the usual auger-bar. (Not shown.) Said head or member having through opposite lateral portions thereof suitable openings l'nl for the passage thereinto of shavings, cc. formed in the boring operation, is equipped with a cutter or bit 2, preferably of the general structure or outline shown. Said cutter has an aperture 2at produced through a central portion 2b thereof, having flat upper and lower surfaces, with preferably circular or arcuate lateral edges 2C, said lower at surface resting upon a corresponding surface 1b of the member or head l, and said arcuate lateral edges 2c fitting in between corresponding flanges or lugs 1C upon said head portion. Said cutter has the normally upstanding lips or cutting edges 2d facing in opposite or reverse directions, the purpose of which is obvious, and occupying or filling enlargementsor continuations l@La of the openings la, produced in the head or member l, said lips or cutting edges being tangential to the circle of said head, the object of which is alsoapparent.
For holding the cutter 2 removablyT in place, so as to be readily resharpened or renewed when necessary, a bolt 3 is inserted through the central aperture 2a of said cutter or bit after seating it upon the head l, and a coincident or registering aperture 1d in said head or member, and a conical sleeve or washer 4, having a central vertical opening therethrough, is slipped upon said bolt after said insertion thereof. J am or interlocking nuts 5 5a are then suitably screwed upon a left-handed screw-thread of the bolt 3 to secure the several parts rmly in place as against longitudinal or endwise displacement. Said bolt has its inner end head or diskportion 3TL provided with a lateral edOe notch 3b to receive a dowel or pin 6, suitably held in either of two apertures le le in the head or member 1 to provide against the initial or subsequent turning of said bolt. Said sleeve or washer 4t has upon its normally upper surface or end at its lateral edges opposite arcuate or curved lugs or ianges 4, contacting with the corresponding fianges or lugs lC of the head or member l, the space thus formed between said washer and head being adapted to provide for the reception of the central portion of the bit 2, as shown.
It will be noted that this auger-bit or cutter is adapted for use more especially for boring wood in the direction of the length thereof, as in making pump-stocks, Wooden pipes, and the like, it being understood that a separate auger is iirst used for preparing the way for the entrance of this auger-bit or cutter.
Latitude is allowed as to details herein, as they may be changed as circumstances suggest without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is- 1. An auger-bit comprising a removable cutter or bit proper, having circular or arcuate lateral edge portions a shell carrying the latter and having downward-extending arcuate lugs or flanges conforming to the aforesaid corresponding portions of the cutter or bit, a sleeve or washer 4having corresponding lugs contacting with the aforesaid lugs to provide for the reception between said shell and washer of said bit or cutter proper, a bolt passing through said washer and shell, and concentric with said circular edge portions and said flanges, and means to secure the several parts together.
2. An auger-bit comprising a removable cutter or bit proper, a shell carrying the latter and having aXiallyextending lugs or flanges, a sleeve or Washer having corresponding flanges or lugs eHective with the aforesaid fianges or lugs to provide for the reception between said sleeve and shell of said cutter or bit proper, a bolt passing through said washer and shell and having a notched inner end disk adapted to receive a dowel or pin of said bit-carrying shell, and means for securing said bolt in place against longitudinal displacement.
8. An auger-bit comprising a head or shell having downward-extended arcuate lugs and intermediately of the latter a central aperture and also a dowel or pin projecting from its inner surface, the removable bit proper having tangential lips and a central apertured portion resting upon said shell between said arcuate lugs, a sleeve or washer having upon its upper surface also arcuate lugs opposed to the aforesaid corresponding lugs to provide for the seating of said bit proper, a securingbolt inserted through said shell or head, said cutter or bit proper and said sleeve or washer, and having an inner end notched disk adapted to receive said dowel or pin, and interlocking nuts screwed upon the projecting end of said securing-bolt.
4. A device of the character described, comprising a tubular carrying-head equipped with arcuate lugs or flanges, a sleeve having corresponding lugs or flanges contacting with the aforesaid lugs, a removable cutter or bit proper centrally seated between said lugs, said head having a central bolt-receiving aperture and equipped with a dowel, also dowel-receiving apertures, and a bolt passing through said sleeve and said cutter or bit and having applied to one end thereof means for securing it in place and provided at its opposite end with a disk having a notch receiving the projecting end of said dowel.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
