Be it known that I-,CARLES F'. SPENCER, of Rochester, in tiffcounty of Monroe, and State of New York,v have invented a certainnew and useful Improvement in Fruit-Jars; and I do herebydeclare that the following `is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of thisl specification. v

inthe ordinary 'methods of sealing fruit-jars, the Stoppersl are-secured 'by the application of 'pressurel on the top of the stopper by means of some mechanical appliance for the purpose. ItO is a serious objection to this method that the cover is dih'icult to remove, in consequence of having the pressure of the atmosphere superadded to that-'of the mechanical device employed, making it very diicult to'remove the cover Without breaking, if of fragile material.

It is. the object of my invention to obviate these dilliculties, and the nature of the improvement' consists in sealing jars by means of a stopper, packing from the inside, which is held in forcible contact with an elastic gasket and shoulder above, by means of a cross-yoke, bearing upon the mouth of the jar, which is provided with cams for increasing the pressure.

The mouth lofethe jar is formed with anannula'r recess, C, having shoulders a cl aboveand below` it, against Y thel upper one of'which rests an'elastic gasket or packing-ring, b. The top, c, of thejar, is made off justsu'fiicient size for the stopper B itopass through, while the lshoulder d, beneath, being of smaller diameter, retains it in the recess C..

Thestopper B hasv formed thereon a lug or bearing, e, with an'eye, through whichl passes across-yoke or clamp, g, that rests on the. top of the jar-mouth. The upper edge of the stopper is also bevelled or inclined, as shown at-z', so that, asitvp'resses up against the packing b, it centres or adjusts itself so as to bear equally all around, ahd thus produce a perfect joint. i a

In sealing the jar, the stopper is rst inserted in therecess C, where it rests on the shoulder d. The gasket is then inserted, and, by-means of the. hooked rod g, inserted in eye e. The stopper is raised so that thefgasket is in contact with the shoulder a, whenthe rod g is passed through, so that its ends rest in depressions i z, in thc top of vthe jar. These depressions are provided withhinclined'sides, so that by simply turning the rod around out of the depressions, thc stopper is drawn up tightly against thepacking, andiheld securely in place.' i

By thus sealing thejar from theinside, the stopper can be easily removed at any time by simply loosening the clamp,- when the stopperis forced down by the pressure oi' the atmosphere, and may be removed with' ease.

By this means the diiiiculties of removing thetjai' against atmospheric pressure are entirely overcome.

What I claim as m'y invention, is l The colrnbination of the annular recess C, provided with shoulders a d'and stopper B, formed with its upper edge bevelled or cone-shaped, and central lug e, or its equiralent, with the cross-rudy, inclined bearings z'z',and gasket b, arranged and operating substantially as'and for the'purposes 'set forth.
