Description

PATENTED JAN. 80, 1906.. R. E. BOOTH & J. WISE.
OAR STARTER. APPLICATION FILED AUG.10, 190s.
ROBERT E. BOOTH AND JOHN WISE, OF OHARLEROI, PENNSYLVANIA.
CAR-STARTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 30, 1906.
Application filed August 10, 1905. Serial No. 273,519.
1.0 aZZ whom, it 771/6111] concern:
Be it known that we, ROBERT E. BOOTH and JOHN WISE, citizens of the United. States,
Cal-Starters, of which improvement the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to that class of improvements used for starting'cars on rails; and it consists of a lever mounted directly on the upright posts integral with the clampingjaws, the said jaws operating in conjunction with two downwardly-inclined inner faces of the two flanges of the body-frame and adapted to grip the rail when power is applied to the lever; and the object of our invention is to provide a substantial meritorious device of direct-wedge-power transmission of pressure to the rail-gripping jaws constituting a firm fulcrum for the lever. We attain this object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation view of our carstarter placed on a rail. Fig; 2 is a crosssection view showing the parts.
The rail is designated by R, the ear-wheel by W, the body-frame by B, the lever by L, and the jaws by J J.
The shorter arm of the lever has a downward curvature O, adapted to follow the periphery of the car-wheel when moved upward for engagement by the downward pressure on the longer arm of the lever.
The jaws are attached together with an ordinary bolt and have two upright posts 10 integral thereto. The said posts are provided with lugs Z Z for the lever to bear on. The said aws are provided with faces 0 c to impinge on the sides of the rail and inclined rear surfaces 8 8, adapted to slide on the inclined surfaces 00 an of the inner side of the rear surfaces .9 s of the jaws, thereby guiding the said jaws to grip the rail with a wedgepower. The body-frame B also is provided with a pair of upwardly-projecting shoulderbraces 'm m to strengthen and support the upright posts 19 p of the jaws.
The operation of our inventionis as follows: Our car-starter is placed on the rail under the rear of the car-wheel. The longer arm of the lever is elevated and the shorter end brought in engagement with the car-wheel, as shown in Fig. 1, power being applied to the longer arm of the lever in downward motion, the weight bearing directly on the posts 19 p of the aws, thus pressing them downward, bringing the inclined rear faces of the jaws on the inclined faces of the guiding-flanges, thereby causing them to impinge with a firm grip of wedge-power on the sides of the rail.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim to have invented, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a car-starter, the combination of a pair of clamping-jaws having a lever mounted thereon, and provided with faces and inclined rear surfaces seated in the body-frame, substantially as described.
2. In a car-starter, the combination of a pair of clamping-jaws, having a lever mounted thereon and seated 011 inclined faces of the flanges of the body-frame, and the bodyframe, substantially as described;
3. In a car-starter the combination of a lever, the said lever being mounted directly on a pair of clamping-jaws, a pair of clamping-jaws, the said jaws being provided with faces, and inclined rear surfaces adapted to be brought in engagement with the faces of the guiding-flanges of the body-frame, and the body-frame, the said body-frame being provided with inclined faces on the inner sides of the flanges substantially as described.
I11 testimony whereof we have hereunto signed our names in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ROBERT E. BOOTH. JOHN WISE. In presence of GEORGE G. FOX, JAS. F. CHALFANT.
