BRAKE FOR ELEVATED RAILWAYS SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 496,237, dated April 25, 189

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN N.VALLEY, of J orsoy City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Brake for Elevated Railways, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide improved brake devices especially designed for use in connection with elevated railway structures.
The invention consists in a brake mechanism in the form of a clamp consisting of brake jaws or shoes adapted to clamp the rail or stringer between them, and suitable means for actuating them.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a railway structure showing cars provided with my improved brake apparatus. Fig. 2 is an end view of the brake mechanism detached, and showing the stringer of the railway structure, and the brake shoes, the latter in the open position. Fig. 3 is a like view, with the brake shoes closed. Fig. 4 is a side elevation; and Fig. 5 is a plan view.
In the drawings a suitable railway structure Ais shown, from the stringer A of which the cars B are suspended by suitable wheeled hangers C. On the hangers O of one or more of the cars a yoke D is supported, arranged in about a horizontal plane, one end being widened, as atD, to support the brake shoes E, E, and the operating devices. On the inner side of the end D of the yoke D lugs d are formed, between which the arms E of the shoes are pivoted by the horizontal pivots e, and support at their upper .ends, the horizontally ranging brake shoes or jaws E. To
the lower ends of the arms E, below the pivots e are connected the toggle levers F, and at the junction of the said toggle levers a link G is connected, the upper end of the said link being pivotally connected with a crank arm II on a shaft I, which ranges transversely of the yoke D.
-To one end of the shaft I is connected an operating arm J, and secured to its free end is a chain K, the said chain being carried downward through the car and over a guide roller L suitably supported in the car, the lower end of the chain being connected with an operating lever L, as shown in Fig. 1.
In the operation, it will be seen that upon the lever L being thrown, the chain K will be drawn downward and will rock the shaft I which, through the medium of the crank arm H and link G, will throw the toggle levers F, causing the upper end of the arms E and the shoes E carried thereby, to be thrown inward, the said shoes contacting with sufficient pressure against the opposite side faces of the stringer A. A reverse movement of the lever L will serve to release the shoes, as will readily be understood.
It will be understood that the means shown for operating the brake shoes E is merely for the purpose of illustrating the application practice, be greatly varied, the distinguishing feature of my invention being the clamping devices adapted to firmly engage the opposite side faces of the stringer or equivalent rail or beam in a railway structure.
Having thus described my invention, what Patent, is-
In a railway, the combination with a carriage, of a brake mechanism, comprising arms carrying clamp jaws or shoes, and pivoted intermediate of their length at opposite sides of the carriage and movable toward and from each other in the horizontal plane, for clamping the sides of a track rail or stringer, toggle levers connected with the arms beyond levers at their meeting point, and a rock shaft stantially as described.
