Description

No. 811,013. PATBNTED JAN. so, 1906u T. WEISSER.
DOOR LUCK.
APPLICATION FILED mmm, 1905.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEm Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 30, 1906.
Application iiled March 29, 1905. Serial No. 252,688.
T0 all whom t may concern:
Be it known th at I, THnoDoR Wnrssnn, a subject of the German Emperor, and a resident of Heidelberg, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in and Relating to Door-Locks, of which the following' is a specification.
This invention has reference to improvements in and relating to door-locks; and its object is to construct a lock which will be adapted to be used either as a right-hand or lefthand lock, also either for inwardly or out wardly opening room or street doors, also either as a mortise or a cupboard or rim lock, and the bolt of which can be adjusted either to act as a lifting bolt or latch which will ride over to engage the catch when the door is being' shut or as an ordinary sliding bolt.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a view in side elevation of the complete lock, the cover being removed, and Figs. 2, 3 and 4 are sections on the lines c b, c d, and ef, respectively.
For the purpose of attaining the object of my invention and so that the bolt shall be capable of movement in the manner indicated I combine three forms of bolt in one, so as to form a star having three projections or boltheads c b c. This three-headed star is rotatably fixed by a screw g to an angular tumbler 7c, which is pivotally supported at el in the lock-case. By means of a screw H the star can be firmly secured to said tumbler, said star having three apertures, so that any one of the bolts c I) c may be arranged toproject out of the side of the lock-case. The bolt-head c is adapted to act as a lifting-latch and either for a right-hand or left-hand rim or mortise lock.
The lock, although only having one opening at the side of its case., is adapted to be used either as a right-hand or left-hand lock. If the lock is to be used as a cupboard or rim lock, it may be fixed to the door by means of the usual screws. y
The bolt-headsb and c serve as ordinary sliding shooting-bolts, respectively, for right and left hand rim or cupboard or mortise locks.
If the bolt is to operate as an ordinary lifting-latch, the headc is adjusted to project, and it is raised when passing over the incline of the catch on the door-frame when the door is closed. If the bolt is to operate as a sliding bolt, either the bolt-head Z) or c (according to whether a right-hand or left-hand lock is necessary) is arranged to project in the place of c. In any event, whether the lifting bolt-head c or either of the sliding bolt-heads I) c is used, the action will be to raise and swing back the top of the tumbler f, which latter, together with the bolt, will be returned to its normal position by the action of a spring Z.
In order that the door may be opened in the ordinary way, I provide the handle-spindle R with an arm m, the free end of which is in contact with a vertically-slidable bar n, which is formed with a slot s, through which a pin a projects to act as a guide andthe depression of which by the operation of the handle will depress the rear end, and consequently raise Vand swing back the front end of the tumbler.
To prevent` unauthorized opening of the door, I provide a locking-disk O, having pins 1 2 3 on one side, with which the suitablyshaped top end of the spring' Z engages, so as to prevent said disk rotating except when turned by a key, which latter will engage in a slot t in said disk.
An additional locking device may be employed which consists of a horizontally-slidable bolt p, situated under the tumbler, the rear end of which bolt has on its upper face a lug, so that when the bolt is moved forward said lug will be under the rear end of the tumbler 7i; and prevent said end being depressed. Any other suitable locking device may, however, be employed.
Having now fully described my said invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
An improved lock adapted to "be used as a right or left hand and as a rim or cupboard or mortise lock, having' a tumbler /c carrying a star or the like formed with three heads (t, c, each serving as a latch or bolt for a particular purpose, said star being rotatably attached to the tumbler by a screw g and adapted to be fixed by a screw H on said tumbler so that either the head c, serving as a lifting-latch, or either of the other tapered heads c, serv- -ing as right and left hand sliding' bolts respectively, may be made to project through the side of the case, all for the purposes and substantially as described and illustrated.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
