LOCK.
SFECFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 491,352, dated February 7, 1893.
Application filed February ll, 1892. Serial No. 421,213. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it rsi/tty concern:
Beit known that I, MARTIN HIGGINS, a citizen oi the United States, and a resident of Niles, county oi Trumbull, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which I hereby declarethe following to he a full, clear, and exact description ot the invention, such as Will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to locks, and is especially adapted to provide a nonpickahle lock of simplest form, and adaptable to all usual situations.
My invention consists in the combination and arrangement ot parts and details of constructiomas hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawings and more specitically pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings Figure i is a view of the interior of a lock with the bottoni plate removed; Fig. 2 is a similar view with protecting plate or shield, removed from the case; Fig. 3 is a View oi" this plate detached; Fige is an eXterior view of the case; Fig. 5 is a view of the locking holt detached; Fig. 6 is a view of the top plate of case showing the pivoted locking dog in position; Fig. 7 is an interior vien7 of a case containing similar mechanism; Fig. 8 is a vien1 with shield plate removed; Fig. 9 is a view of this plate; Fig. i0 is an exterior view of case; Fig. li isadetailof lockingioolt; Fig. l2 is a detail of pivoted locking dog in position; Fig. i3 is a vier;7 of the back plate of one of the locks. Fig. li: is a vie-W ot' keeper for door post.
In the drawings A hacioplate.
C is the lock holt as in Figs. 5 und il, provided with projecting portion C', central poris the case andB the tion C2, acted upon by the key and rear portion 3,3 slotted at C4.
D [Figs 6 and l2] is the pivoted lockingdog, adapted to be raised in the manner of a tumbler by the key and provided with the projeoting lug d.
D is the pivot.
A springE secured to the post F, depresses the locking-dog D.
A pin G adapted to iit in the slot Gl in the heit C and guide its longitudinal movement is firmly senin the front plate A of the oase, a raised boss o serving for a hearing.
The projecting lug d on the locking-dog D is adapted to enter one v0r the other of the recesses C5, or C in the holt C, according as the holt is forced out or withdrawn after being lifted by the key.
CIT is a thin projection adapted to iit in the Ward ot a lock, and C8 is a V shaped depression, against the sides of Which the key hears in pushing in or out the bolt.
C is a shoulder to prevent the withdrawal of the bolt from the exterior of the case.
H. is the protecting or shield plate for the key-hole which lies between the lock and hase plate and is adapted to prevent theentrancc of the key or any picking instrumentinto the case from the exterior side ot the door to which the lock is attached. This plate H is provided with a key-hole Which can he made to register with the key hole in the case or can be moved aside so as to cover the opening. It is made of hardened steel so that it can not he drilled or broken.
I-I is an additional holt integral with the plate II and moving with it.
h. is a pin projecting through the slot o2 in the case, by which the plate H maybe moved over or away from the key-hole.
In Fig. 3 is shown a notch 7L which is adapted to receive the lug a3 upon the plate a4, pivoted on the exterior of the case at d5, the slot a6 permitting the lug to pass into the case. A guiding partition a7 receives and guides the holt II.
In Figs. 7 and S are shown a form of lockingbolt for the bolt II consisting of the locking bolt I, guided by the partition as and provided With a pin fi', which projects through the slot o, in the case, as in Fig. i0, and is retained by the catch J pivoted at j. The locking-holt I passes through the partition Al at am.
The latch K at the upper portion of the lock is of any common construction of door latch and is not included in this invention.
rihe keeper R shown in Fig. 1st is provided with a steel hack plate R so that the holt can not he reached by drilling through the post, but
ifi/*hat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
IOO
1. In a lock, the combination of a case A, provided with a base plate B, a locking dog pivoted to the front wall of the case, adapted to be lifted by the key, a locking bolt C provided with recesses adapted to be engaged by the locking dog at the diierent positions of the bolt, one or more thin portions on the bolt adapted to engage the Wards on the key, means 3. In a lock,a shield plate H, provided with a key-hole adapted to register with the keyhole of the case in one position thereof, abolt integral with the shield plate, a pin h passing through a slot in the case and secured to the shield plate, and means for securing the plate and attached bolt in either position of its movement, comprising the locking bolt I, partition as, slot a, stud z', and pivoted catch J,
substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. In combination with the pivoted and spring-actuated locking dog D, provided With lug d, the bolt C, provided with slot O4, recesses C5 and C6, thin projection C7, and V shaped depression OS and pin G upon the lock case, substantially as described.
