Description

PATENTED AN. 30, 1906.
A, P, TRMV; ULEANING DEVICE..` APPLICATION FILED m4121519@ muy?, j mms' Unirse sterne To alla/hom tmc/y cori/cern:
Be it known that I, ADDISON P. TRIMM, e
citizen of the United States, residing et Butfalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cleaning Deviaes, of which. the following is a specification.`
This invention relates to improvements in devices for cleaning lookout or head windows of cars, locomotive-cabs, and the like; and it has for its object to provide an eifect ive device which can be readily operated from Within to free the outside of the Window from rain, dust, snow, and other substances, to provide simple means for simultaneously cleaning both the inner and outer sides of the window whereby the steam on the innerrside may -be cleanedv ofi', to provide means for scraping the outer side of the window, to free l the same' o ice or such other adhering metter' Which-isimpossible to vremove with the cleaning rubber or pad, and to further improve on devices oi this character in a inenner to 'loe hereinafter described;
My invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement, and combination et parts to he hereinafterdescribed, and per ticulsrly pointed out in the nppended claims. l In thedrawings, Figure l. is e, perspective View of a portion of a car, showing myim proved device applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical section teken on line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is en enlarged horizontal sec* tion taken on line 3 3, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a vertical section through a portion ot line 2 2, Fig. l, showing the device cented to-bring the metallic scraper in contact with the outer side of the window. Fig. 5 is a section teken on n planeindicated by line 5 5, l*l ig. Fig. 6 is en inner elevation oi a portion oll the lookout-window and the :trame therefor, showing the manner oi holding the device elevated. Fig. 7 is a view of one end ol the outer cross-head carrying the cleaner-psd :md the metallic scraper.
Referring to the drawings in detail, like letters of reference refer to like parts in. the several figures. i
The letter A designates a car, and, more properly the vestibule of scar, having a lookout or hond window B, to which myirnproved device (designated by the letter C) is applied.l
l'or the purpose of removing moisture, snow; sandh or other, mattei' which nnght adhere to the outer side of the Window and render the vie-w of the niotormen obscure. The frame Specification of Letterseteiit. Application filed December 15, 1904;. Serial Nn. 237,02?.
.the opernting-handles, to be hereinafter de- `carried by operatingdieiidles H, which ex- `or scraper against the window.
Patented Jan. 30, 1966.
D of the window is provided with vertical slots E, linedwith brass to provide smoothness and offer the leest possible resistanceto A. cross-heed G extends horizontally across the lookout-window and is adapted to traverse the window' in a vertical plane, it being 6s tend thrpugh the slots Eend "at their ends within the eer ere provided. with removable grips h, which are secured to the handlesby screws it or otherwise. Throughout thegreater portion oi their length. these hendles ere flat end slide freely within the slots .hin order to quickly cerrythe cross-head to the V bottoni of the window end back. The outer ends oseid handles nre cylindrical end threads., ed and. pass through holes 71,2 neer the ends of the cross-head from which they project, and ontorthe )rejecting ends I screw nuts it to securely' asten the crosshead to seid hendles. l 'Un theI inner side of the Crosshead, coincident with the hotes h3, a rectangular socket ht is formed to receive the ilnt portieri @of the handle adjacent the cylindrical end,
which prevents turning oi' the hendles on the crossliead. The crossdleed (3f is provided on its inner side with. a longitudinal groove i, in which a felt or rubber strip i is secured, so that one edge of the seine brought in contnct with the window to free the seine of rain, sleet, dsc., when the 'crossdoeed is moved up and down to traverse the window. Said cross-heed is also provided with s flongitudinel groove on its upper side, in which e inetallic strip J is secured, Wliichstrip is bent in-` ward toward the Window, with the free longitudinel edge thereof held out of contact with the window. -At such times when the rein or sleet freezes to the window the device is cented, as shown in Fig. 4, which is done by pressing down on the handles to slightly turn the moss-heedV and bring the metellic strip 0n moving the device downward when in such. position the windmv. is quickly clcened end en unch-l structed view ohtnined, .etshoth the metallic strip end the iiexihle strip neer against the 105 window, as shown in Fig. st-the metallic strip to loosen the ice and theflexible strip to remove the ice and clean the window si-multaneonsly. i also provide .a cross-head K within the vestibule or housing, which ispro-l vided with openings 7c to permit of its being placed on the handles end with set-screws l",
s cured, said strip serving to be brought in con dow to reinove the steain troni the saine. means of the set-screv.v L" er *ss-head K may be adjusted toward and lroin the Window.
Normally the device is held elevated, in which position it is locked by suitable means (herein shown as pivoted stops L) which are turned to lie underneath the handles and across the slots E. TWhen in this position, the stops are locked against movement by pins M, inserted into apertures m in the window-haine, thus preventing accidental lowering of the device While holding the saine in readiness for use at all times.
To prevent the Wind, rain, Src., entering the vestibule or housing when thedevice is elevatcd, each slot is covered by a strip of rubber N or other suitable material, one end of each strip being affixed to the cross-head G and theI other end thereof being attached to the Window-traine beneath the slot it covers. When iowering the device to clean the window, the strips loop themselves, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, thus permitting free action oi' the device.
i'iaviiig thus described my invention, what l the `windowv the conibinalion with the wall having guidi i slfits therein, oi' a cross-head normally hcld elevated and iiaviiur handles cxtci'iding 4 7 i through said slots to pcrniit the device to be operated l'roni within the housing, a clcain ing device carried by said crossehcad, and
means for closing' said slots when thc devicel is in its noi'nial position.
