To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES E. CRosBY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gassoway, in the State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Wire-Stretchers; and I do dec are the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in wire-stretchers of the leverhandlejaw type.

The object of the invention is to provide a simple, strong, and durable device of this character which will be very efiicient in operation and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.

With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction,combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved wirestreteher, showing the same in 1ts open position. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same in its closed position, and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the plane indicated by the line 3 3 in Fig. 2.

Referring to the drawings by numeral, 1 denotes my improved wire-stretcher, which comprises a main lever 2, having at one end a reduced handle 3 and at its opposite end an enlargement 4, which has its outer portion beveled, as shown at 5, to form' a foot. At the inner portion of the enlargement 4 upon one side of the lever 2 is formed an integral jaw 6. The latter is spaced from the lever 2 by a slot or groove 7 and has its serrated or roughened face 8 disposed angularly, as shown. This jaw 6 coacts with a similar jaw 9, which is formed upon one end of a handlever 10. The latter is pivoted, as shown at 11, upon one side of the lever 2 and has one of its ends reduced to form a handle 12. The jaw 9 is disposed angularly upon the opposite end of said lever 10 and has a serrated face 13 ,which coacts with the face 8 of the jaw 6. The end of the lever 10 upon which the jaw 9 is provided is formed with a projecting tongue 14, which is adapted to enter the groove 7, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The end of this tongue 14 is slightly beveled and is curved on an arc eccentric to the pivot 11. Owing to the angular disposition of the opposing faces of the jaws 6 and 9, the latter forms a cam which will tightly grip the wire or the like which is placed between the faces 8 and 13.

In order to permit the device to be used for cutting wire, I provide in one edge of the lever 2 a notch or recess 15, which is adapted to receive the wire to be out. The adjacent face 16 of the pivot-lever 10 is adapted to swing across said recess 15, so as to sever the wire therein. The levers 2 and 10 are formed of iron, and the jaws 6 and 9 and those portions of the levers adjacent to the recess 15 are preferably formed of steel, so that the device will be more durable.

The use of the tool in stretching wire or the like will be readily understood. The wire is placed between the jaws 6 and 9 when the latter are in their open position, and the lever 10 is then swung upon its pivot to cause the wire to be clamped firmly between the faces 8 and 13 of said jaws. The toe or foot 5 of the lever is then engaged with a 0st or other stationary object, and the hand e end of the device is swung in the proper direction to stretch the wire, the toe 5 serving as a fulcrum.
