- UNITED STATES PATENT oEEIcE.
CHARLES VVILLIM G REGORYJR., OF BRISTOL, ENGLAND.
Specification of Letters-Patent. Application filed arch 21. 1905. Serial No. 251,353-
COIPRESS-IBLE PACKING FOR WOOD-BLOCK ROADFPAVING.
Patented Jan. 23, 1906.
Be itknown that I, CHARLES WILLI GREGORY, Jr., a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, and -a resident of 24 Gotham road, Bristol, England, have invented certaln new and usefull Improvements in Compressible Pacln'ng for WoodBlock Roadrame,
tion.
This invention relates toa compressible packing, and has for its object the construcof which the following 1s a specicaltion of. sucha packing as to allow freedom in 'the expansion of wood-block road-paving caused by vehicular traiiic, weather, and other iniiuences, such freedom being' attained blocks or packing into spaces left or prepared for'the same in channels and other aces where required. f
Re erring to the accompanying sheet of drawings, Figpre 1 is a diagrammatical view illustrating t e packingin position. Fig. 2 is a front elevatlon of acklng-block, casin partly torn away; and ig. '3 a part sectiona plan view.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
carrying my said invention into effect I form the packing or block a, Figs. 2 and 3, of corrugated paper (cardboard, `millboard, strawboard, or the like) coated or saturated with coal-tar, one iece, or several pieces b, as in Fig. 3, lace Yparallel to one another, and inclosel t e same in a cardboard or the like case c, open at ends likewise tarred, and around said case c I `wrap canvas d, stuck on with paste, and stitch or sew the whole with twine or other suitablematerial e, and finally dip in tar. When usingseveral pieces b, I form one piece or layer b of a greaterl length than the remaining pieces and wrap the extra length, as at b2, round the others, thereby 1nclosing same. These blocks I form in rectangular shape and of convenient lengths and 1n different thicknesses, as required, to allow of expansion of wood-block road-paving f, Fig. 1, the block being shown inserted between the pavingf and curbstone g. The depth cf the block I form somewhat less than the said paving for which it is used, and when .placed 1n posltion is finally sealed up level wlth the lurface (paving) with pitch h, run in While layer, strips interposed between the casing and the corrugated layers and between the corrugated layers, the upper strip being of greater length than the remaining strip and aving its ends lap the lower strip and a teX-' tile cover for the casing, 'the cover, casing,
layers and strips being treated with tar.
In testimony whereof I have aiixed my Y signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES lWILLIAM GREGORY, JUNIOR.
' Witnesses:
GERARD MosELY, JAMES SMITH.
