COMPOSITE SHEET.
Application filed March 1, 1912.
The character of the invention may be best'understood by reference to the following description of an illustrative embodi ment thereof shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a plan view of one face of av portion of a composite sheet having parts of some of the layers thereof broken away to disclose the character of other layers;
Fig. 2 is a reverse view of the sheet shown in Fig.1; and a Fig. 3 is a' section taken on line 33 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing, the illustrative composite sheet there shown as embodying the invention comprises a sheet-like layer 5 of Manila paper or other suitable material having on one'face thereof a coating layer 7 of glue, or other appropriate adhesive.
On the opposite face of said sheet-like layer and in adhesive engagement therewith is a water-proof layer 9, such, for example as black asphaltum, which is inherently flexible and will not crack when the sheet is bent or folded.
The asphaltum used .is somewhat sticky. To prevent articles from adhering thereto and to prevent any possibility of the asphaltum being scraped from the paper layer and becoming ineffective to insulate the paper layer from water,,there is provided a wear resisting protective layer 11 shown herein as a Woven and preferably somewhat open mesh cotton cloth although it will be understood that other fabrics or textile materials might be used if desired. The
threads or fibers of the textile layer applied to the flexible asphaltum layer preferably are embedded somewhat therein so as to be,
securely retained thereto, and at the same like layer having an adhesive coatlng on one time project from the face of said layer and constitute an effective wear resisting protective layer,

with any article merely on moistening said face and pressing the sheet to such article.
In some instances the water-proof and fabric layers may both be extended beyond one or more edges of the paper layer to provide strong, water-proof margins as at 13. The adhesive character of the water-proof layer will enable it to be placed'in adhesive engagement with an article to constitute an effective water-proof seal to prevent ingress of moisture to the adhesive face of the paper layer, and contribute to the maintenance of the adhesive engagement thereof to the article to which it is attached.
To prevent the edges from being pulled up or separated from the article to which they are attached, the fabric layer may be extended beyond the other layers to present a thin margin or margins as at 15, which may be secured to the article by glue or other suitable adhesive.
A composite sheet of the character described may be produced in wide, narrow ribbon-like strips or in other forms convenient-for commercial use. When out into long narrow strips it may be employed for sealing paper boxes or packages, for strengthening the corners or other parts thereof, for binding or wrapping purposes and various other uses as desired. The sheet may also be employed to constitute a complete protectiyecovering for a bag or a corrugated paper box which is liable to be exposed to moist conditions. The sheet also lends itself advantageously'asa lining for boxes, bags or other receivers.
Having; described illustrative embodiments of the invention without limiting the same thereto, what I claim asnew and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
.1. A composite sheet comprising a sheetface thereof; a water-proof layer on the opposite face thereof; and an outer woven fabric layer for protecting said Water-proof layer, all of said layers being secured together and said water-proof layer and said fabric layer being extended beyond said sheet-like layer to provide a Water-proof edge protective margin exposed beyond said sheet-like layer.
2. A composite sheet comprising a sheetlike layer having an adhesive coating on one face thereof and a water-proof layer on the opposite face thereof; and a textile protective layer for said water-proof layer, all of said layers being secured together and said textile layer being extended beyond said other layers and presenting both surfaces exposed to provide a protective margin.
3. A composite sheet comprising a sheetlike layer 5 having an outer adhesive coating 7 on a face thereof; a waterproof layer 9 on the opposite face thereof; and an outer textile layer 11 for protecting said waterproof layer, all of said layers being secured together and one of said layers be ing extended beyond the others to provide an edge protective margin having an exposed surface.
4. A composite sheet comprising a sheetlike layer having an outer adhesive layer on one face thereof; a Waterproof layer on the opposite face thereof; and an outer textile layer for protecting saidwaterproof layer all of said layers being secured together, tWo of said layers being extended beyond the other to provide an edge-protective margin having an exposed surface.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
