TO ALL WHOM IT M AY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, J. A. Snows, of Holly Springs, in the county of 'Marshall, and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Bale-Ties; and I do hereby declare thatthe following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof; which will enable those skilled in the art to-make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to a new and improved method of tying or fastening the bands on bales of cotton, or the hind on otherarticles baled; and the improvement consists in shaping and forming-the endsof the band in such a manner that they shall lock together and be securely tied and fastened, and in the manner hereinafter described.
Figure 1 represents a side view of a band with the ends'cut and formed according to my invention. Figure 2 isan edge view of the same.. Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. This bale-tie relates to bands made-of hoop or band-iron used in-baling cotton, and other articles of a similar nature, or all articles which are secured by bands in the bale-fornn but more particularly those articles which 1 an elastic; or such as will expand when the pressure is removed. 4
In carrying out my invention,'I cut; punch, or form, by any mechanical means, one or more slots, 11, near one of the ends of the band A, and near the other end of the bale-hand I fiorin one or more notches, c. This notched end is passed through the slot or slots at in making the tie orfastening.
The slot orslots a are made diagonally across the. bands, or at any desired angle with the edges of the band, s'o that the notched end is somewhat twisted when it is passedthrough the slot, .hut.so-that when itis passed through. and drawn so that the shoulder of the notch q engages with the end of the slot, as seen in the drawing, the notched end lies flat, or nearly so, on 'th'e band, asQreprsented.
In this example of my invention,- two slots are made near the end of the hand, and the end is turned over,-
so that these slots. correspond in position, and so that the notched end will pass through both slots, thus strength suing the tie, as sen in the drawing, bnt I do not confine. myself to that particular method.
The slotsa and notches may be formed by dies or punches, 'or in anyeonvenient manner. It will be seeu that the tie is formed on 'theband, no second piece being required, and that the tie is made after the ends of the band are preparedywithout the use of tools of any kind. There may be any desired number of. the notches c, withtli'e bearing-shoulder made of any desired form,
so that variations in the size or diameter of the bales may be provided for.
I claim as new, and desire to -secure by Letters Patentv The bale-tie, formed upon the .band A by notching one of its ends, upon the under side at d, and passing the same through a diagonal slot, a,'tormed in the folded opposite end,-as herein shown and described.
