HAMMEVITRLIESMS" DROP-DOWN GUN;
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 1, 1905. Seria1No. 253,279.
ment of the barrel.
A further object of my invention is to provide an improved lock system whereby a more effective locking is secured.
A further object of the invention is to provide a detachable or removable'hammer-lock wherein the lock and cover-plates and the guard are made of a single piece, whereby the device may be easily and readily removed for cleaning or other purposes. Said device is protected by means of a stock-connecting piece connecting the breech to the stock and forming another feature of my invention.
These and other objects are attained by the improved construction, arrangement, and combination of parts more fully described hereinafter, reference being hand to the accompanying drawings, the different views of which will now be described in de,
tail.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section through the center line of the gun. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section passing through one of the hammer-locks. Fig. 3 shows the coverplate with the complete hammer-lock. Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the cover-plate with the parts of the lock removed. Fig. 5 is a front elevation of said plate with the hammers and other lock parts. Fig. 6 is a front elevation of the plate with the lock parts removed. Fig. 7 is a cross-sectional view of the lower portion of the breech, showing the arrangement of the hammer-locks therein. Fig. 8 is a top plan view of the stock-connecting piece. Fig. 9 is a front elevation of same. Fig. 10 is a side elevation of a portion of the gun, showing the means for securing the barrel on both sides. Fig. 11 shows a top plan view of the barrels. Fig. 12 is a vertical longitudinal section through the breech, showing the arrangement of the improved-lock system; and Fig. 13 is a cross section on line a b of Fig.12.
Likenumerals refer to out all the views. v
Referring particularly to the drawings, 1 represents the stock-connecting piece secured to the breech 2'by the-screw3 and to thestock by means of a projection 4- and screws 5 and 6, extending through the upper like parts throughi Patented J an. 16 1190.6,
extension of the breech. Arranged within the recessed portion of the stock-connecting piece 1 is the trigger-plate '7, with-the triggers 8 and 9, the sears 10, and the spring 11. The trigger-guard-12 is secured to the plate 7 at its forward end by meansof the screw 14 and at its rearward end by means of its attachinghook 15. Th'ecover-plate 13 of the breech is made one with upwardly-extending I plates '16 16.- r 1 The parts of the locks (hammers 17, levers I 18, and mainsprings 19) are arranged on'the outer sides of the plates 16 16, the hammers 17 and levers 18 being pivoted on pins 20, 21, 22, and 23, respectively. The hammers 17 are held in operativeposition through the action of sears 10 engaging notches 24', said sears being pivoted on a pin 25, arranged in a suitable projection 26. The triggers 8 and 9 are moved in slots 27 of the trigger-plate 7.
The operative position of the parts of the lock is shown in full lines, while the inoperative position is shown in dotted lines.
When the barrel of the gun is lowered after the disengagement of the locking-bolts, (he'reinafter described) the forward end of the levers-18 will be engaged by a projection of the tongue piece (not shown) and lowered by the same, so that said levers are caused to bring the hammers 17 into their operative position.
The gun is taken to pieces as follows: The lock parts are first brought into operative position, and after having removed the barrel and the tongue-piece and unscrewed the screw 28 from the cover-plate and the screw 29 from the stock-connecting piece the entire mechanism of the gun may be easily removed by pulling on the trigger guard, whereby the breech may be easily cleaned from the interior.
Referring more particularly to Figs. 10 to 13, 30 indicates the thumb-lever operating the bolt of the locking system and provided with the downwardly-extending pin 31. The upper end of said lever has a small pin or projection 32, which actuates the upper bolt 33 .the several lock parts, and means for when the thumb-lever is rotated. The lower end of the pin 31 has a laterally-projecting arm 34, carrying an upwardly-extending pin 35, engaging a downwardly-extending fork portion 36 of the lower or main locking-bolt 37, whereby the latter is also actuated when the thumb-lever 30 is rotated. The lockingbolt 37 is -arranged over the plane of the breech portion on which rest the barrels of the gun when the latter is closed, said locking-bolt snapping over the rearwardly-extending fastening-hook 38, whereby a more effective locking is secured, as the lever-arm (distance between the locking-bolt and the hinge 39) of the resistance is thereby increased.
A further arrangement for securing the barrels on the breech consists in providing the barrels on both sides with extensions 40 40, engaging correspondin recesses 41 in the breech when the gun is in t e locked position. Thus any lateral movement of-the barrels is effectively avoided.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a drop-down gun, the combination with the breech and the stock, of a stock-connecting piece, removably secured to said breech and stock, a trigger and breech coverplate made of a sin le plece, a tri ger-guard, means for removab y attaching t e latter to said trigger-plate, vertic ally-proj ecting plates on said coverplate, pivot-pins on said vertically-projecting plates for the reception of locking the barrels on the breech, substantially as set forth.
2. In a drop-down gun, the combination with the breech and the stock, of a stock-connecting piece removably secured to said breech and stock, a suitable recess provided in said stock-connecting piece, a trigger-plate arranged within the recess of said stock-connecting piece together with the triggers, sears and springs, a trigger-guard removably attached to said tri ger-plate, a breech-covering plate made 0 a single piece with the trigger plate, upwardly extending projections on said cover-plate and made one with the latter, pivot-pins on said projections for the reception of the several lock parts, and
means for locking the barrels of the gun on the breech, substantially as set forth.
3. In a drop-down gun, the combination with the breech and the stock, a connecting piece between the same, and a suitable recess in said connecting-piece, of a tri ger and breech cover-plate made of a sing e piece, said trigger and breech cover-plate carrying the several parts of the lock housed partially within the recessed stock-connecting piece and partially within the forward end of the breech, substantially as set forth.
4. In a drop-down gun, the combination with the breech and stock, a suitably-shaped connecting-piece between the same, a trigger and breech cover-plate made of a single piece and carrying all the parts of the gun-locks; of the thumb-lever of the locking system, the downwardly-projecting pivot-pin of the same, an upper projection on the thumb-lever, engaging the upper locking-bolt, a lower projection engaging the lower locking-bolt arranged over the barrel-fastening, a rearward extension on the latter engaged by said lower locking-bolt, and means for preventing the lateral movements of the barrels in any case, substantially as set forth.
5. In a drop-down gun, the combination with the breech and stock, a suitably-shaped connecting-piece between the same, a trigger and breech cover-plate made of a single plece and carrying all the parts of the gun-locks; of the thumb-lever of the locking system, the downwardly-projecting pivot-pin of the same, an upper projection on the thumb-lever, engaging the upper locking-bolt, a lower projection engaging the lower locking-bolt arranged over t e barrel-fastening, a rearward extension on the latter engaged by said lower locking-bolt, rearward extensions on both sides of the barrels, and corresponding recesses, on the sides of the breech, adapted to be enga ed by said extensions when the gun is in t e locked position, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CARL LOHSE.
