Description

H. M. PRESTON. JOURNAL BOX.
No. 81,002. Patented Aug. 11, 1868.
H. M. PRESTON, OF UNIONVILLE, CONNECTICUT.
Letters Patent No. 81,002, dated August 11, 1868.
one
IMPROVEMENT IN JOURNAL-BOXES.
din fidgthnl: ttfttttllit in these Esters fiatettmn making new! if flge mm.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, H. M. PRESTON, of Unionville, county of Hartford, and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Mode or Construction of Journal-Boxes and to enable others skilled-in .the airt to make and use the same therefrom, I will proceed to describe the construction and operation thereof; 7
The nature of this invention consists in making the box in three psi-ts, so that when the adjusting or tighteningrpressure is exerted, each will move or press in three directions towards the centre.
It furthervconsists in providing wedges, of a right-angled-triangle shape, which are or may be made separate or attached to a pressure-cap, and tightened'by means of tightening-screws, passing through the cap or band directly on to or against the edge of said wedges when they are made separate from the fastening-cap Iu'the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is an end or side view of a head in which this improvement is arranged.
a is the head of a connecting-rod or lathe, in which the three-part box c' c! c is fitted.
d (1 are right-angle-triangle-shaped wedges, which are fitted to work closely and freely in the head a, and against the sides of the boxes 0' c.
e is a V-shaped pad, fitted into an angle (obtuse anglelat the uuienof thev two parts of the box next to the strap or cup f. 4 r
The part of the box 0 is fitted firmly or closely at the bottom of the opening in the heada.
These boxes are zdjnsted und secured firmly in their proper places against the journal by means of setscrews, 7; k, or a, or screws which maybe fitted into the cap directly against the end or edge of the wedges d'i .Thus it'will be seen that as the bearings wear, by simply turning the tightening-screws, or by compressing the wedges 0! d the boxes 0' c a will close against the pin or journal from three points of a circle towards a common centre, thus producing or securing a peri'oct bearing on all sides against the journal, and allowing the boxes to be easily and quickly removed, when desirable, which in the ordinary way-is very irksome and inconvenient: I i l I believe I have thus shown the nature, construction, and advantagcof thisinvention, so as to enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same therefrom.
What I claim, therefore, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- The combination of the boxes 0' c c, wedges d-d, or their mechanical equivalent, head g, and tighteningscrews, substantially as and for the purpose described.
I H, M. PRESTON. [Ln 5.] Witnesses:
