SOFA-BED.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 9, 1906.
Application filed August 14, 1905'. Serial No, 274,039-
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE N. WVERsEL, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Cincinnati, county of Hamilton, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sofa-Beds, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a sofa-bed with a hinge for coupling the back and seat and for permitting the back to take either a vertical or a horizontal position.
The object of my invention is a latch for looking the members of the hinge in a fixed relation after the back has taken its vertical position, which may be thrown simply by drawing the seat forward and upward to allow the back to assume its horizontal position. This object is attained by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view showing the base of the sofa-bed in section and the seat, back, and hinge in elevation. Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1, but showing the movable parts brought to a forward position. Fig. 3 shows the parts in the position they occupy when the seat is raised to release the latch. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the hinge with the latch removed, portions 'of seat and back being shown. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the latch upon an enlarged scale.
Referring to the parts, the base A and the ends a of the sofa-bed are of ordinary construction. To the top of the base A at its ends are attached two vertical brackets B, within which are sliding rollers c, which are attached to the under side of seat C and which permit the seat to be moved backward and forward relatively to the base, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. To the seat O is attached one member (1 of a hinge, the other member d of which is attached to the back E, the members being pivoted together at point (i Latch G is pivoted up on the stud (Z up on member d of the hinge and has at its opposite end a hook 9, adapted to engage a stud (1 projecting outward from the member (1 of the hinge. Latch G has hanging from it a dependent rod g. Base A has secured to it a block a in a position such that when the seat C is brought to its forward position the rod g hangs vertically above it.
The operation is as follows: When it is desired to change the device for use as a bed, the seat is drawn forward to theposition shown in Fig. 2. Then the seat is lifted at the forward end, pivoting about the rollers c, which brings the dependent rod g into contact with the block a, raises the latch G and releases it from the stud (Z so as to allow the member (1 of the hinge to swing about the pivot d and the back to take its horizontal position, as shown in dotted line, Fig. 3. When the back is raised again to bring it to its vertical position, the hook g again engages the stud d lVhat I claim is- 1. In a sofa-bed the combination of a seat, a back, a hinge coupling the seat and the back, a latch pivoted to the seat and having a hook adapted to reinovably engage a projection upon the back, and a dependent rod pivoted to the latch for disengaging the latch from the projection on the back when the seat is raised.
2. In a sofa-bed the combination of a base, brackets secured to the base, a seat reciproeating in the brackets, a back, a hinge coupling the back and the seat, a latch pivoted to the member of the hinge attached to the seat and having a hook at the other end, a stud projecting from the member of the latch at tached to the back and adapted to engage the hook, a block secured to the base, and a dependent rod pivoted to the latch and adapted to engage the block when the seat is brought forward and raised.
