Description

PATENTED JAN. 9, 1906.
J. P. GOLDEN. FEED BOX FOR CANE MILLS.
APPLICATION FILED APB-.3, 1905.
IN VE/V T 0/? Ettorney I WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FEED-BOX FOR CANE-MILLS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 9, 1906.
Application filed April 3, 1905. Serial No. 253,417.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN PORTER GOLDEN, of Columbus, in the county of Muscogee and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feed- Boxes for Cane-Mills; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled. in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in cane-mills, and more particularly to an improved feed-box therefor, the object of the invention being to construct a feed-box for a cane-mill in such manner as to avoid the loss of juice which might exude from the cane as the latter enters and passes through the opening of the feed-box.
A further object is to so construct the feedbox that it will be reversible.
With these objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an inner face view of a feed-box embody ing my improvements. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section, and Fig. 3 is a horizontal crosssection.
The front plate of the box is represented at 1 and is provided at its upper and lower ends with lugs 2, projecting inwardly from the rear or inner face and extending slightly beyond the ends of the plate to form lips 3, which engage the flanges of the top and bottom plates of the mill. The plate 1 is made with a feed-opening 4, located, preferably, equidistant from the ends of the plate, and from the walls of said feed-opening flanges 5 6 project inwardly toward the rolls of the mill. The side flanges 5 are comparatively short, while the upper and lower flanges 6 are of greater length and have curved edges which conform to the curvature of the rolls of the mill and lie close to said rolls.
A short distance above and below the feedopening 4 the front plate 1 is provided with outwardly-projecting enlargements 8, each of which forms a cup having an inclined bottom 9, which extends through an opening 10 in close proximity to the feed-opening 4. A projection 11 on the inner face of the plate 1 forms an extension of said inclined bottom and serves to direct juice which might drip into the cup into the mill. It will of course be understood that only one of the cups will be in use at a time, and that by providing the box with two such cups the box will be reversible.
From the construction and arrangement of parts above described it will be readily seen that when cane is being fed to the mill through the feed-opening 4 more or less uice Will exude from the cane and drip from the lower edge of said feed-opening on the outside of the front plate. This juice will drip into the cup under the feed-opening and will be conducted by the inclined bottom of said cup through the opening 10 into the mill, where it will find its way to the juice-receptacle therein and be recovered with the juice expressed by the rolls,
My improvements are simple in construction, but will serve to save much uice which has heretofore been lost.
Slight changes might be made in the details of construction of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof or limiting its scope, and hence I do not Wish to limit myself to the precise details herein set forth.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A feed-box fora cane-mill havinga feedopening and a slot below the lower face of the feed opening, flanges projecting inwardly from the inner face of the box said flanges having curved edges to conform to the curvature of the rolls of the mill, and an enlargement on the front face of the feed-box and having an inclined upper face alining with the lower wall of said slot.
2. A feed-box for cane-mills, having a slot near each end, outwardly-projecting dripcups communicating with said slots, said feed-box having a feed-opening common to both slots and drip cups, and flanges proj ecting inwardly at the upper and lower ends of said feed-opening.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN PORTER GOLDEN.
