Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, F RANK A. RYTHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grinding-Mills, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to grinding mills in its general adaptation, and in particular to that type of such mills having vertically arranged grinding plates with a feed openingin the base thereof and a horizontally arranged feeding device operative to move the grain toward the feed opening, and consists in an improved form of grain deflector detachably secured to the walls of the feed hopper and overlying the grain feeding device; the object of my invention being to provide a construction that may be readily removed from the feed hopper or attached thereto for the purpose of enabling the mill to be equally eflicient when grinding light grain, such as oats or barley, or corn with the cob. I attain these objects by means of the mechanism illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of part of a grinding mill having my invention forming a part thereof; Fig. 2 is a vertical and longitudinal section of Fig. 1 along line AB; Fig. 3 is a. vertical cross section of Fig. 1 along line CD; Fig. 4 is a view in perspective of the grain deflector removed from the feed hopper of the machine.
The same reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views.
1 represents the frame of the machine having the horizontally arranged shaft 2 journaled in bearings carried thereby, 3 a rotatable grinding plate secured to the shaft, and 4 a fixed grinding plate secured to the frame of the machine and provided with the usual feed opening 5 near the center thereof.
6 represents a sleeve secured to the shaft 2 and provided with a circumferential spirally arranged feeding rib 7 on the periphery thereof operative to advance the material along the bottom 8 of the feed hopper 9 toward the opening in the fixed plate 4 and coacting with the corrugated surface 10 of the bottom of the hopper as a cob breaker when the mill is used for the purpose of grinding corn with thecobs. Vhen grinding lighter grain, as oats, I
have found that when the spirally arranged rib is used alone there is a tendency for the grain to rise as it approaches the feed opening in the plate, and there is not a positive feeding motion thereof as is desired. To cure the defect and increase the efliciency and capacity of the machine, I have provided a semicircular shell 11 having a diameter greater'than the spiral feeder and covering the feeder adjacent the feed opening throughout substantially one-half the length thereof, and 12 represents a grain deflector plate having the upper edge thereof formed in a manner to fit closely against the end wall of the feed hopper, to which it is detachably secured by means of bolts 13, the body of the plate being secured to a strap member 14 whereby it is connected with the semicircular shell 11 and having the ends of the plate fitting closely against the side walls of the feed hopper. The shell 11 is provided with a lip member 15 that engages with the opposite end of the hopper in a manner to retain the shell in operative position.
In operation the grain enters the open end of the shell at opposite sides of the strap member l t and is carried along by the feeding device in a positive manner toward the grinding plate, resulting in a rapid feeding action and consequent increase of efl ifiiency' in the grinding operation of the m1 What I claim as being my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a grinding mill, a hopper, a feeder in said hopper, grinding plates at one end of said feeder, a member in said hopper to coact with said feeder, and a removable shield in said hopper inclosing a portion of the feeder adjacent the grinding plates during regular operating conditions.
2. In a grinding mill, a hopper, a helical feeder disposed therein, a semi-cylindrical shield inclosing a portion of said feeder, and a slanting deflector engaging the periphery of said shield and overlying the entire uninclosed portion of said feeder.
3. A grinding mill including, in combination, a horizontally arranged rotatable shaft, a grinding plate secured thereto, a coacting fixed grinding plate carried by the frame of the machine and provided'with a feed opening therein, a feed hopper, a spirally arranged feeder carried by said shaft and operative in the bottom of said hopper to advance the grain toward said feed opening, a semicircular shell covering the end of said feeder adjacent said feed opening, and an inclined. deflector secured to the rear wall of the feed hopper and to one end of said shell and operative to deflect the grain tovvard the same end of said shell. 4:. A grinding mill including, in combination, a horizontally arranged rotatable shaft, a grinding plate secured thereto, a coacting fixed grinding plate carried by the frame of the machine and provided With a feed opening therein, afeed hopper having said shaft at the bottom thereof, a spirally arranged feeder carried by said shaft and operative to advance the material toward said feed opening, a detachable semicircular shell covering substantially one-half of the length of said feeder from inclosing said feeder adjacent the grinding plates and communicating With Said plates, a hopper overlying said shield and feeder, and a deflector in said hopper arranged above said shield and exposed portion of the feeder and operating to direct the material to the side of the shield adjacent the open end.
