HORSE-COLLAR.

Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, GEORGE W. HAHN, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at Mansfield, inthe county of Piatt and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Horse- Collar, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to improvements in horse-collars.

The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of horse-collars and to provide a simple and comparatively inexpensive one of great strength and durability adapted to dispense with hames.

A further object of the invention is to provide a horse-collar which will not rub or pull loose and which may be conveniently repaired when necessary.

With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended, it being understoodthat variouschanges in the form, proportion, size, and minor details of construction within the scope of the claims may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacificing any of the advantages of the invention.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a horse-collar constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same, partly in section. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one of the side pads. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view of one side of the collar, taken on the line 6 6 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a similar view on the line 7 7 of Fig. 2.

1 I designate two sheet-metal sides, preferably constructed of sheet-steel and having a compound curve in cross-section and conforming substantially to the configuration of the front of an ordinary horse-collar. The metallic sides, Which may be constructed of any suitable metal, taper upwardly and downwardly from'an intermediate point and have their lower ends curved inwardly toward each other, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. These metallic sides carry at their inner or rear faces complete side pads 3, and they are approximately S-shaped in cross-section, their rear edges 4 being rearwardly curved and their front edges 5 being forwardly curved, as clearly shown in Figs. 4 and 5. The curved front edges 5 are approximately semicircular in cross-section to present rounded convexly-curved faces to the neck of an animal. The pads 3, which are preferably constructed of leather, consist of inner and outer walls stitched together adjacent to the edges and stufled with hair or other suitable material, are provided at their front and rear edges with longitudinal flanges or attachment portions 6 and 7, which lie against the inner faces of the front and rear edges of the metallic sides and which are secured to the same by suitable fastening devices, preferably consisting of copper staples 8, inserted from the outer face of the metal sides and having their legs embedded in the leather attachment portions or flan es of the pads. The copper staples are flexi le and may be readily removed when it is necessary to repair or renew the pads, and the removal of the pads does not operate to separate the walls of the pads from each other or expose the hair or other material with which the pads are stufled. The attachment portions or flanges 6 and 7 of the side pad consist of extensions of the outer or rear wall or face of the same, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The metal sides form a complete front for and enable the horse-collar to be used without hames, and they are provided with upper and lower rings 9 and 10 and have plates 11. The plates 11, which may be riveted or otherwise secured to the metal sides of the collar, areprovided with alined eyes and enable hametugs to be readily attached to the horse-collar.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A horse-collar, comprising thin metallic sides forming a complete front for the collar, complete side pads having inner and outer flexible walls and provided at their side edges with seams, the inner walls of the pads being fitted against the inner faces of the metallic sides, and means independent of the seams of the side pads for securing the latter to the metallic sides, whereby the side pads are adapted to be removed therefrom without separating the walls of the said pads.

2. A horse-collar, comprising thin metallic sides curved in cross section and having their front and rear longitudinal edges extended in opposite directions, and complete side pads arranged along the inner faces of the metallic sides and provided at their front and rear edges with flexible attachment portions or flanges formed by extending the Walls of the pads beyond the seams thereof and fitted against the front and rear edges of the metal sides and secured to the same, sub stantially as described.

3. A horse-collar, comprising metallic sides curved in cross-section and having rearwardly-curved rear edges and forwardlycurved front edges, the latter being partially rolled to present inner convexed faces, and complete side pads. arranged along the inner faces of the metallic sides and provided at their front and rear edges with flexible flanges or attachment portions fitted against and conforming to the configuration of the front and rear curved edges of the sides and secured to the same, said flexible flanges or attachment portions being formed by extensions of the outer or rear walls of the pads, substantially as described.

4. A horse-collar, comprising thin metallic sides forming a complete front for the collar, complete side pads provided with inner and outer walls and having seams connecting the walls at the side edges of the pads, and means for detachably securing the side pads to the metallic sides at the inner and outer edges of the former and at points beyond the seams thereof.
