ADJUSTING MECHANISM FOR ROPE-DRIVES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 2, 1906.
Application filed June 19, 1905. Serial No. 265,869.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, RICHARD H. STEVENS, of Munhall, Allegheny county, Pennsylvania, have invented a newand useful Adjusting Mechanism for Rope-Drives. of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a plan view showing a ropedrum and its driving-gears equipped with my improved adjusting mechanism. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional View, and Fig. 3 is a detail side elevation showing the manner of applying the adjusting mechanism to a ropedrum.
My invention relates to the class of drum mechanism for driving wire ropes or similar flexible connections, and is designed to {provide an improved means for adjusting the position of the driving-drum relative to the shaft.
The invention is specially designed for application to the rope connections for actuating the transfer mechanism on hot-beds of rolling-mills, though it may be employed in other connections.
Heretoforeinrope-actuatingtransfermechanismfor hot-beds, the pushing-dogs actuated by the ropes are often shifted out of For example, if ashort beam is being pushed, as all of the dogs are brought forward part of them will contact with the beam, while the others beyond its end will be carried on by their own momentum, and thus gradually brought out of proper alinement. My invention is designed to provide an adjusting device by which the actuating-drums can be adjusted relative to their driving gearwheels so that the dogs may be brought into proper alinement.
In the drawings, 2 represents a drivingshaft having pinions 3 intermeshing with gear-wheels 4 on short shafts 5. Drums 6 are loosely mounted on the several shafts 5, which are in endwise alinement. Each drum 6 is provided near its periphery with a short shaft 7, carrying at its inner end a pinion 8, intermeshing with an internal gearwheel 9, formed integral] y with tne ge ar-Wheel 4 To the outer end of the shaft 7 is secured a worm-wheel 10, which intermeshes with a worm 11, mounted on a shaft 12, carried in suitable bearings on the drum and having means for turning it, such as a squared end or handle. It is evident that when the pinion 3 is actuated the drum will be driven byits locking connection to the wheel 4. If at any time the angular position of the drum is to be adjusted, the worm-shaft 12 is rotated, which in turn will actuate the shaft 7 and the pinion 8, and thus turn the drum relative to the wheel 4. The wheels 4 being in mesh with pinions 3 on the driving-shaft 2 will re main stationary, while the drum will be turned to a different angular position. I can thus adjust each rope individually until its dog is brought into the desired alinement.
The advantages of my invention result from the simple and efiicient means for adjusting the angular position of the drum relative to the gear on the shaft. The drum may be fixed to the shaft, the gear-wheel being loose thereon, both the drum and gear-wheel may be loose thereon, and many other variations may be made in the form and arrangement of the drum, the rope connections, &c., without departing from my invention.
I claim- I 1. In an actuating device, a shaft, a gearwheel thereon, a drum loose on the shaft, and an adjustable locking means pivoted eccentric to said shaft securing the drum to the gear-wheel; substantially as described.
2. In a rope-actuating device, a shaft, a gear-wheel thereon, an internal gear on the shaft, a drum loose on the shaft, and a wormgear device mounted on the drum and having a gear-wheel engaging with the internal gear on the shaft substantially as described.
3. In rope-actuating mechanism, a shaft,
a drum, and a gear-wheel mounted thereon,
one of said parts being loose on the shaft while the other part is secured thereto, and an adjustable lock between the two elements pivoted eccentric to said shaft and arranged to shift one of said parts an ularly relative to the other part; substantially as described.
4. In rope-driving mechanism, a shaft, a drum and internal gear-wheel mounted thereon, at least one of said parts beingloose on the shaft, and a worm-gear mechanism mounted on the drum and having a gear-wheel engaging with the internal gear; substantially as gaging the internal gear; substantially as dedescribed. scribed. 10 5.
