To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE SERGEANT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Greensboro, in the county of Guilford and State of North'Carolina, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Sawmill-Feeds, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates generally to saw mill feeds and more particularly to the mechanism whereby to bring about relatively slow feeding movement of the saw mill carriage and relatively fast retractile movement thereof, my improvements being equally applicable to rack feed and rope feed apparatus.
The object of my present improvements is toprovide a portable mechanism which may be readily disposedwithin the husk frame, the latter of which forms a part of all saw mill feeds, to readily engage with and operate the usual connecting device between the feed arrangements and the rope or rack utilized to connect the samewith the saw mill carriage.
A further objectof my present improvements is the provision of a friction drive member, the particular construction of which, together with its relation with the parts to be driven, is such as to maintain a truly cylindrical surface at all times as it Wears in use.
A still further object of my inventionis to provide a portable feed arrangement including a shiftable friction drive member and manually controlled parts'for actuating the drive member in its shifting movement including certain features promoting durability, strength and effectiveness, together with means operable to normally maintain the drive member in neutral position. 2 These objects together with certain others reside more particularly in the features of my improved feed and may be readily understood from the following description, reference being made to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and'in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved portable feed removed.
Fig. 2 is a similar View il u tra ing the same in operative position and in its practical embodiment.
Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view looking at the opposite side of the feed arrangement with respect to Fig. 1.

Referring now to these figures, and particularly to Fig. 2 in order that the practical use of the present invention may be apparent, the saw mill carriage 10 is as usual actuated through a rope feed 11, the drum 12 of which is mounted upon a drum shaft 13, journaled laterally beneath the tracks 1 1 of the carriage 10 and provided at one side of the tracks with a gear 15 extending within the lower portion af a rectangular husk frame 16, transversely of the upper portion of which is a counter-shaft 17 to which power from any suitable source is communicated through a belt 18, to its pulley 19.
Adjacent one of the side walls of the husk frame l6,this frame is provided with an inner parallel wall 20 through which an intermediate connecting shaft 21, the latter of which is best seen in Fig. 3, is journaled, this shaft having a gear 22 at its outer end in mesh with the gear 15 of the drum shaft 13, and having at its inner end a gear 23 for engagement by a gear of the feed arrangement.
In accordance with my present invention the feed arrangement is mounted within a rectangular frame consisting of parallel longitudinal angle beams 24 and 25, and end cross beams 26, the latter of which are extended at their ends beyond the side bars 24 and 25 and provided with apertures 27 in order that they may be readily and securely bolted to the upper surfaces of the intermediate husk wall 20 and the side wall thereof remote from the said intermediate wall, as seen. particularly in Fig. 2 where the feed mechanism carried by the frame is thus disposed in the space between the intermediate wall and one side wall of the husk. The entire feed mechanism of itself is mounted within the frame 24, 25, and 26 and is portable therewith so as to be readily removable from the husk 16 either for purposes of repair or substitution or for disposition within another husk at. a distant point.
The feed shaft 28 is j ournaled transversely above the side bars 24 and 25 in bearings 29, one of which is plainly seen in Fig. 1, and is provided at one extremity with a gear 30 meshing with the gear 23 before mentioned of the connecting shaft 21, the feed shaft being also provided with a driven member thereon preferably cast in one piece and consisting of inner and outer annular flanges 31 and 32, the spaced opposing faces of which form friction surfaces for engagement by the friction wheel 33 adjustable therebetween, by virtue of which the shaft 28 may be driven in relatively 0pposite directions and at relatively different speeds.
The friction wheel 33, as best seen in Fig. 4, is formed of laminae preferably of paper, secured tightly upon a sleeve 34 by means of head blocks 35, the sleeve 34 being in turn keyed upon a shaft 36 projecting laterally adjacent one end of the portable feed frame and j ournaled in a bearing 37, the outer end of the shaft 36 having a pulley 3S connecting by a belt 39 with the pulley 40 of the counter-shaft 17 before mentioned.
The side bar 24 as seen particularly in Figs. 1, 4 and 5 is provided intermediate its ends with upper horizontal flanges 39 forming a flat guide surface and engaged by a sliding frame 40 to which the bearing 37 of the shaft 36 is secured, so that the shaft 36, with the friction wheel 33, is shiftable longitudinally of the portable frame in order that the friction wheel may be moved into engagement with either of the flanges 31 and 32 of the driven member.
Through the upper portions of the side bars 24 and 25 at one end of the frame is journaled a rock shaft 41, at one end of which is a crank 42, connected by a connecting link 43 with the sliding frame 40, the opposite end of shaft 41 havin a collar 44 therearound and keyed thereto by a key 45.
To the collar 44 is bolted the lower end of an upstanding lever 46, the connecting bolts being seen at 47 in Fig. 3 and the key 45 extending through said lever.
Thus by movement of the lever 46 in one direction or the other from its neutral or intermediate position the shaft 41 will be rocked and the shiftable frame 40 moved to throw the friction wheel 33 into engagement with either the inner flange 31 or the outer flange 32 of the driven member, the lever 46 being normally held in. its neutral position by means of a spring controlled arm 48 carried by theside bar 25 andhavinga recessed free end 49 as best seen in Fig. 6, into the recess of which a laterally projecting pin 50 of the lever is movable.
Thus my improved feed arrangement may be readily disposed within any ordinary husk frame 16 of the usual saw mill feed, and may be readily controlled to bring about the desired relatively fast movement of the saw mill carriage in one direction and the relatively slow movement thereof in the opposite direction. 7
It is obvious also that in view of the particular construction of the friction member 33 and its particular disposition and use as a driving member, any relative movements thereof with respectito thesurface against which it is moved, will serve to maintain its truly cylindrical surface as it wears, as dis tinguished from the result if thetransmission of power were efl'ected in an opposite direction, that is from thesurfaces 31and 32 to the wheel 33.
I claim s 1. In a sawmill feed, the combination with a husk having a connecting shaft provided with gears, of a ortable frame detachably connected within the husk and removable as a whole, said portable frame including spaced parallel sidebars, one of which is flanged at an intermediate point, a feed shaft journaled across said side bars and provided with a gearadapted for engagement with one of the gears of the connecting shaft of the husk, a driven member secured upon the feed shaft and having inner and outer flanges forming inner and outer friction surfaces, a sliding frame engaging the flanged portion' of the said side bar, a drive shaft having a bearing on the sliding frame, a friction wheel carried by the drive shaft and disposed between the inner and outer friction surfaces of the driven member, and a manually controlled lever having connections with said sliding frame to control movement of the latter.
2. In a saw mill feed, the combination with a husk having a connecting shaft pro vided with gears, of a portable frame secured within the husk and including spaced parallel side bars, one of which is flanged at anintermediate point, a 'feedshaft journaled across said side bars and provided with a gearadapted for engagement with one of the gears of the connecting shaft of portion of the said side bar, a drive shaft having a bearing on the sliding frame, a friction Wheel carried by the drive shaft and disposed between the inner and outer friction surfaces of the driven member, a manually controlled lever having connections with said sliding frame to control movement of the latter, said lever having a laterally projecting pin, and a spring controlled arm having a recessed free end, the recess of which receives the pin of the lever for normally holding the lever in neutral position.
