Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J OHANN EIoHMI'iLLER, manufacturer, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at Nuremberg, Bavaria, Germany, have invented new and useful Improvements in Adjusting Mechanisms for Screw-Threaded Needle-Point Insertions of Compasses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object a fine-adjusting mechanism for screw-threaded needle-point insertions for compasses in which the nut mounted on the needle is made diskshaped and secured against axial displacement by being inserted in a recess corresponding in width to the thickness of the disk in the foot of the needlepoint, arranged at right angles to the needle-foot of the leg of the compasses.
This improved fine-adjusting mechanism is shown in one form of construction in the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is an elevation; Fig. 2, an elevation turned at right angles to the previous view, and Fig. 3 a vertical section further again turned at right angles to Fig. 2.
The needle-foot a of the leg I) of the compasses is provided with a smooth perforation d, adapted to receive the needle 0, which perforation is continued on the inside of the compass-leg b as a semicylindrical groove e. A milled dlsk f is mounted in a recess 9, formed at ri ht an les to the axis of the needle, the widt of w 'ch recess corresponds to the thickness of the disk f, so that the latter cannot be axially displaced. On one side of the needle-foot a a stirrup-shaped enlargement h, surrounding the recess g, is provided,
in the yoke of which enlargement a pressurescrew 'i, adapted to be adjusted against the edge of the disk-shaped nut f is mounted. The insertion-needle c is also provided with a longitudinal groove 70, in which a small screw l, arranged on the needle-foot a, engages, and thereby prevents the needle revolving.
If the pressure-disk 'i be released, the needle which is prevented rotating is axially displaced in one direction or the other by the disk f being turned in one or other direction. In order to fix the needle in the desired position, it is only necessary to press the pressure-screw i against the edge of the disk f, which is thereby secured against rotation and in this manner prevents any unintentional displacement of the needle.
I declare that what I claim is- 1. In combination in a compass having a needle-foot having a longitudinal bore therein, a screw-threaded needle adapted to fit in said bore, said foot having a lateral recess therein, a disk fitting in said recess and having a screw-threaded central opening through which the needle passes, and means for preventing the needle from rotating when the disk is turned, substantially as described.
2. In combination in a compass having a needle-foot provided with a smooth longitudinal bore, a screw-threaded needle fitting in said bore, said needle having a longitudinal recess therein, a screw in said foot having its end engaging in said recess so as to prevent the needle from turning, said foot having a lateral recess and a disk fitting in said recess and having a central screw-threaded hole through which the needle passes.
3. In combination in a compass having a needle-foot provided with a smooth longitudinal bore, a screw-threaded needle fitting in said bore, means for preventing the needle from rotating, said foot having a lateral recess, a disk fitting in said recess and having a central screw-threaded hole through which said needle passes, a stirrup-shaped enlargement connected to the needle-foot and 1nclosing on one side the said recess and a pressure-screw mounted in said enlargement and having its end adapted to engage with the disk so as to prevent movement of the same.
