PATRICK LENNOX, l OF LYNN, MASSACHUSETTS`- Letras Patent No. 80,829, dated Auges 11, 1868.
mrEovEn MAGEINE FOE'BEAMING'EIDES.
'ro ALL To wHoM vEnEsE PnEsENrs SHALL COME:
' Be it known that I, PATRICK LENNOX, of Lynn, in the county of Essen, and State. of Massachusetts, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Machines for Beaming Hides; and dohereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, due reference being h ad to the accompanying drawings, making part of'thisspecication, and inwhich- Figure 1 is a side elevation, and
Figure 2 a vertical central and longitudinal section ofmy invention.
Figure 3 is an inner end elevation, Yand y Figure 4 an under side view Vof. the movablecar, tobehereinafter referred to. i i
This invention, in some respects, may be considered as an improvement upon that for which Letters Patent ofthe United States were granted to myself and Thom-as Roberts, on the .29th,day of October, 1867, although the present machine possessesfeatures and characteristics which in themselves are not necessarily to be considered in conneetiontwith such Letters Patent.
The first point of my present invention consists in a'novelmode ,of eii'eeting the reciprocating rectilinear movements ofthe beaming-tool carrier, and ofraising it above the surface of the operating-bed or tablet of thc Second, in a mode of supporting and eii'ecting thevertical movements of the operating-tablet. Third, Vin an elastic cushion or bed-piece, applied to the top of4 the operating-tablet, in mannen and for Vthe purpose as hereinafter-explained. y t i i Y Referring to the accompanying drawings, itwill be seen'that A denotes a frame, properly constructed, for
receiving and supporting a horizontal shafae, upon the'inner end of which a balance-wheel,`b, is fixed, this j wheel having a crank-,wrist pin, e, applied to its vouter face.
The frame A basa long arm, d, extending horizontally from tit and toward the remaining operative parts of the machine, a4 sliding block ,or-carriagm'e, sliding upon this` arm, and having' jointed to its lower end the beaming-toelholder f, the slding'earriage e being eonneet'edto the wrist-pin c'by a connecting-rod, g, andso thatlrevolutions of the balance-wheel'b-shall cause :i'reciprocating rectilinear movement ofthe sliding carriage e andtool-rholdenf, the latter bein-g pivoted to one end of an eccentric-rod, z, the eccentricstrap,-' z, of snchrod encompassing an eccentric-"blockm', -fixed to the balance-wheel and'about th wrist-pin e, the arrangement o f the i eccentric-blockj with respeetto the wrist-pin being such that Iupon a. forward movement of thesIiding carriage and tool-holder, the beaming-tool lc shall be raisedV above and from of? the hide or' its-supporting-tablet, while upon a reverse or inward movement of such carriage and tool-holder, thebeaming-tool `shall, be maintained in a v Arigid and nearly upright position, and brought forcibly'in contact with the hide or its tablet. V Y
In order to insure the rising. fthebeaming-tool from `above the hide as it approaches its extreme outward movement, the outer extremity of' the. h orizontalarm d is inclined upward at a small angle, as shown at a inthe drawings. p. p p l' The movablcrcar for supporting the hide or side of leather is shown at c as composed cfa rectangular or other Vproper-shaped tablet, e,'carr ying upon its underside, and partially supported by, a swivellinglpost, 6 which is npheld'by a suitable truck, M, 'and so as torevolve freely therein. I
This'truek vM is composed of a rectangular frame, m, carrying fourrer any othersuitablenumberof wheels,
'c c c e, dce., .and being further provided with a circular platform, n', surm'cunting it, and sustained inposition by spiral springs o o o o, suitably applied and conined, the object of Kthese springs being .to form. an elastic or yielding foundationV for the tableta. 1 Y i For the purposeof` reducing friction upon the tablet e', I apply to its under side, and so as to rest and roll upon the top surface of the platform it, four or any suitable number of casters or rcllersp p, duc.
Two parallel rails, q g, areapplied tothe iiooring of the machine, and inalignment with the movements of the beaming-tool, and serve to support and guide the movements of the'movable carl lr.
. As the construction of this movable car is the same, in this instance, with one exception, as that shown in Letters Patent before referred to', and as `the general operation of the whole machine is fully explained thcreim' I omit a'n extended description of its operation. v
My improvement upon the movable car consists in combining the platform 11, -with the truck-frame in such manner as to be enabled to elevate or depress the forward or inner end of such platform and the supportingtablet, in order to the more'readily introduce the hide to the action of the beaming-tool.
In carrying out this portion of my present invention, I support the inner end of the platform n uponl a cross-frame, o', which extends across the truck-frame, and between its side rai-ls, as shown in the drawings, and I support this cross-frame in turn upon the inner and shorter arm of a lever or treadle, p, extending along underneath the truck-frame, and centrally thereof, and pivoted to a bracket, q, depending from the under side of the truck-frame, the outer and longer arm, r,of the lever p, extending in advance of the truck-frame, and
into a position to enable the workman to easily place his foot upon it.'
After the hide has been secured to the tablet,- and the c'ar r'un forward under the beaming-tool, the workman is to place his foot upon the-treadle and depress it.. This will-elevate the cross-frame o, and by so doing will also elevate tho inner end of the tablet e', and bring it and the hide up to and in contact with the beaming-tool.
Were it not for this vertical adjustment of, the tablet, much inconvenience would ensue in running the movable car back andfortll bcneaththe beaming-tool, this inconvenience, in fact, having manifested itself in the lpractical use of the machine described in Letters Patent before referred to.
The third portion of my invention, in the order hereinbefore enumerated, consists in the application of an elastic apron or cushion, s, applied to the upper surface of the operating part of the revolving tableta', as shown in the drawings, the apron, in this instance, being composed of vulcanized India rubber. The object of this India-rubber apron isl to prevent the slipping about of the h ide upon the tablet, and to cause it to adhere thereto underthe action of the beaming-tool. I
I would remarkthat in place of the wheels and axles, as a means ofy moving the car 7c, I- have contemplated the employment of sliding ways or guides applied to the car to slide upon the rails q gx l I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, as follows:
1, I claim, in a machine for beaming hides, or-sleeking or dressing` leather,.actuating the movements of the working-tool by means of the connecting-rod g and eccentric-rod h, the former being pivoted at one end to the sliding carriage, and the latter to the beaming-tool carrier, and both being connected with the balancewheel by the means above described, the whole being arranged and operating as before described.
2.'I claim the application of the elastic apron to the revolving tablet, in manner and forithe'purposes as hereinbefore explained. e
` .8. I claim applying the revolving tablet to the car-truck frame, in such manner as to be enabled.l to adjust its vertical positions, essentially as herein shown and described. l
4. I claim the means-'for accomplishing this vertical `adjustment of thc'revolving tablet, the same consisting of the cross-frame o and treadle p, combined.q and arranged and operating as beforeA explained.
5. I claim the inclination ofthe outer e'nd of the horizontal beam or guide for elevating the beaming-tool,
substantially as before explained.
P. LENN OX.
