VAPOR AND GAS BURNER.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN A. MATHEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Diego, in the county of San Diego and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Vapor and Gas Burners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to vapor and gas burners which contain amixing-chamber; and the object thereof is to provide means to burn all of the gas or vapor that usually escapes from the burner after the flame is extinguished by turning off the supply of fuel. Iaccomplish this object by the mechanism described herein and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan of my improved burner. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, partly broken away, of the same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail or sec tion on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings, 4. represents the ordinary distributing or mixing chamber of a burner of any construction in which gas or vapor is use 5 is the valve which regulates the supply of gas or vapor to the burner, which is supplied through pipe 5. On the stem 6 of the valve is secured an arm 7, which rotates with the stem in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 1. When the valve is fully opened, this arm lies just below rod 8, which is attached to one end of weight 9. Weight 9 is pivotally mounted upon bolt 10, which is fastened to the casing of the distributing-chamber. At the outer end and on the side thereof this weight carries a curved arm 11, the outer end of which projects downwardly into port 12 in the top of the distributing-chamber when the burner is in operation and re duces said port, so that back firing through the port will not take place. Slits 13 in the top of the distributing-chamber provide outlets for the gas or vapor when the burner is in operation. When it is desired to turn out the fire, the valve is rotated to bring arm 7 to engage rod 8 and draw it downwardly, as shown in Fig. 2, when the fuel is cut off, thereby withdrawing the end of arm 11 from port 12 just before the flame goes out at the burner, which then is of sufiicient size to permit the flame to back-fire into the chamber, thereby burning up all of the gas or vapor contained therein and preventing the odor which arises from a gas or vapor burner extinguished in the ordinary way without the use of my attachment.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A vapor or gas burner having a port in that part of the burner from which the gas or vapor issues of a sufiicient size when open to cause back firing and amixing-chamber adja cent thereto; a removable closure for said port; and means to operate said closure upon turning ofi the fuel-supply to the burner.
2. A vapor or gas burner having a surface upon which the gas or vapor burns with a mixing-chamber under said surface and havinga port in said surface of sufficient size when open to produce back firing; a pivoted Weight having an arm adapted to close said port to prevent back firing; and means to withdraw said arm from said port when the fuel-supply is being turned off.
3. A vapor-burner having a distributingchamber provided with a perforated top, said top having a port therein of sufficient size when open to cause back firing; apivotedlever secured to the distributing-chamber, said lever having the shorter end thereof heavier than the longer end; an arm secured to the outer end of the heavy end of said lever, said arm being adapted to close the port in the top of the distributing-chamber to prevent back firing into the chamber; a valve adapted to control the supply of fuel to the burner; an arm secured upon the stem of the valve and adapted to engage the light end of the pivoted lever and cause it to withdraw the arm on the heavy end from the port in the burner when the fuel-supply is being turned off.
