Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IRA L. GnnAri-iousn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stonington, in the county of Baca and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil-Burners, of
which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to oil burners, and particularly to that class of oil burners where hydro-carbon liquid is used and is converted into a gas by said burner prior to its ignition.
A further object of the present invention is to provide an automatic means regulating the flow of the hydro-carbon liquid to such an extent that should the liquid flow into the burner at a greater rate than the same could be consumed, it would gradually be converted into a gas for ignition purposes.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, all as will hereinafter be more fully described, wherein:
Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section constructed in accordance with the present invention, Fig. 2 is a central vertical section taken along line 2-2 of F 1.
Reference being had more particularly to the drawings, A indicates a stove of any suitable construction whether for coal, gas or other fuel, in which the oil burner forming the subject matter of my invention may be placed. A rectangular casing 10 constitutes the main body portion of the burner and has its upper or top side open. The up per edges of the transverse ends of the casing are concave for the reception of the longitudinal vaporizing pipe 12 which extends centrally throughout the entire length of the casing, said pipe having mounted thereon an enlarged drum or cylinder 18. This cylinder 13 is provided with the outlet openings 14 in the sides thereof. The vaporizing pipe 12 is provided with outlet spouts 15 in its under side, by means of which the overflow of the pipe 12 may be conducted therefrom to a concave drip plate 16 located centrally in the bottom of the drum 13. This concave plate 16 is supported upon the vertical standards 17, and is provided with the asbestos lining 18 which forms an absorbent for the oil or hydrocarbon liquid flowing from spouts 15.
The pipe 12 is provided with outlet openings 19 on each side thereof, adjacent to the top in such a manner that the gas being emitted from the pipe 12 passes into the body of the cylinder. A concave baffle plate 21 is supported by the standards 20 located upon the upper side of thepipe 12 and eX- tends over the openings 19 of the tube or pipe 12. This baflie plate is adapted to direct the gases passing from the pipe 12 downwardly in the cylinder 13 thence up to the openings 14 as aforesaid, to the exterior of the burner where the same are ignited. The supply pipe 22 which connects with the main pipe 28 through the instrumentality of the valve 24 extends into the stove over the drum 13 and is elbowed as at 25 to pass into the pipe or tube 12. The portion of the supply pipe located within the. pipe or tube 12, designated 22, is pro vided with outlet openings 26 for the purpose of permitting the hydrocarbon liquid passing from the supply pipe to the tube 12.
In order to provide a means whereby the burner may be initially lighted, the sides of the casing 10 are pierced by the openings 27 which register with the openings 28 located in the side of the drum 13. These openings 27 are covered by the doors 29 which close the registering openings when the same are not desired for any specified purpose.
In operation my improved burner is started by opening the valve 24 to permitthe liquid fuel to flow from the main pipe 23 through the supply pipe 22 by way of the elbow 25 into the portion 22 of the sup ply pipe within the pipe 12. The liquid fuel will flow from said pipe 22 through the openings 26 into the pipe 12 from whence it will flow from the spouts 15 on to the asbestos pad within the segmental plate 16. hen suflicient liquid fuel has been admitted to the burner to saturate the pad 18, the valve 24 is closed and the liquid fuel on the pad ignited through the openings 27 and 28 in the casing 10 and drum 13, respectively. The doors 29 being left open, air will be supplied to the interior of the drum to assist combustion and the pipe 12 will be heated by the flames springing from the asbestos pad 18. As soon as the pipe 12 is heated sufficiently to cause vaporization of the liquid fuel therein, the valve 24 is again opened and the liquid fuel flowing from the openings 26 will be vaporized within the pipe 12, and flowing outwardly through the openings 19 and disbursed through the drum 13 by means of the baflie plate 20, will pour out of the openings 14L to be ignited, the doors 29 having in the meanwhile been closed to shut off the admission of oxygen to the interior of the drum 13. The heat of the burning vapor pouring from the open ings 14 in the drum will be suflicient after the burner is started to keep the drum 13 and the pipe 12 therein, as well as the supply pipe 22 heated to maintain vaporization. It will be understood that should the flow of the liquid fuel be too great to be converted into gas, the fuel Will drop on to the pad 18 on the plate 16 through the spouts 15 Where it will remain until vaporized by the heat within the drum 13.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by U. S. Letters Patent, is
1. In an oil burner, the combination of a casing, a pipe supported by said casing, a stationary cylinder mounted upon said pipe, a drip plate mounted upon said cylinder directly under the pipe aforesaid, a supply pipe extending into the pipe aforesaid, and a baffle plate located above the first mentioned pipe.
2. In an oil burner, the combination of a casing, a perforated pipe supported thereby,
a drum or cylinder mounted upon said pipe,
a baffle plate carried by said pipe, spaced therefrom and extending over the perforations aforesaid, and a supply pipe entering said pipe.
3.
