Description

PATENTED DEC. 12, 1905.
A. G. BGGERS. SURGICAL OPERATING CUSHION.
APPLICATION TILED JAN. 26. 1905.
Anion C. v
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANTON C. EGGERS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO THE GOODYEARS INDIA RUBBER GLOVE MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF CONNECTICUT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 12, 1905.
Application filed January 25, 1905- Serial No. 242,655.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ANTON C. EGGERS, a citizen of the United States, residing in New York, borough of Manhattan, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Surgical Operating- Cushions, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to surgical operating-cushions, and has among its objects the provision of a cushion of this type which is made separable in order to permit the convenient and thorough cleansing of the same.
It is also an object of the invention to provide an operating-cushion in which the body is so supported as to be out of contact with the moisture, &c., collected by the apron.
The invention also seeks to furnish an improved form of supporting-pad and an improved arrangement of said pad upon the moisture-collecting apron.
With these and other ends in view the invention consists in the novel features, arrangements, and combinations of parts to be hereinafter described, and finally pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrative of one embodiment of the invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved surgical operating-cushion. Figs. 2 and 3 are respectively avertical transverse section on line 2 2 and a vertical longitudinal section on line 3 3, Fig. 1 and Fig. 4 is a detail vertical transverse section showing the connection of the apron and pad.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings, A denotes the apron, and B the cushion or pad supported on the same, said cushion or pad being preferably inflatable, as shown. The apron is preferably made of flexible rubber and provided at its outer edge with an upwardly-extending curved flange a, said flange terminating at its ends adjacent an elongated trough-shaped extension C, which is held in concave or trough shape by a transverse flexi- V ble reinforcing-strip inserted in a suitable hem at the outer end of the extension or trough C or by means of a suitable stifleningwire or other means by which a concave shape is imparted to the same. The cushion or pad B is made separable from the apron and approximately of crescent shape, having its open portion directed toward the extension or trough C, as shown. The end portions 6 of the cushion or pad are retained against the flange a by means of flexible retaining-loops d, which are attached to said flange in such a manner that the end portions 1) of the'cushion or pad can be readily passed through andembraced by the same. The intermediate portion of the cushion or pad is provided With spaced inwardly-directed extensions b of any suitable shape, preferably with a V-shaped recess 6 at the center, said extensions 1) being directed toward the extension of the apron and designed to support the body of the person placed on the operating-oushion at a certain distance from the apron in order to permit the free flow of any blood, water, &c. from the apron toward the trough without the impeding of the same by the parts of the bodyforming contact with the apron. It also keeps clean the parts of the body resting on the extensions 7) and prevents the cold feeling caused by contact with the cold liquid collected on the apron.
By'the detachability of the cushion or pad from the apron both cushion and apron may be conveniently and thoroughly cleaned and sterilized and then again placed in position by inserting the inflated end portions of the pad in the retaining-loops of the apron. When the cushion is in use, the forwardly-directed intermediate extensions serve for supporting the body above and out of contact with the apron and the liquids collected in the same, which is of great advantage in the use of the operating-cushion.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A surgical operating-cushion comprising a flexible apron, and a pad detachably supported thereon.
2.. A surgical operating-cushion comprising a flexible apron, and a crescent-shaped pad detachably supported thereon.
3. In a surgical operating-cushion, a flexible apron having a flange thereon, and a pad detachably retained against said flange.
4. In a surgical operating-cushion, a flexible apron carrying a plurality of loops, and a pad detachably retained by said loops.
5. In a surgical operating-cushion, a flexible apron provided with a flange, a pad, and loops for holding said pad against said flange.
6. In a surgical operating-cushion, a flexible apron having a flange upon one face, flexible loops attached to said flange, and a crescent-shaped pad abutting against said flange and having the ends thereof embraced by said loops.
7. In a surgical operating cushion, an apron provided with loops, and a crescentshaped pad having each end portion thereof embraced by one of said loops.
8. A surgical operating-cushion embodying a flexible apron provided with an extension, a pad resting on the main portion of said apron, and means for detachably retaining said pad upon said apron.
9. A surgical operating-cushion embodying an apron provided with an extension, and a crescent-shaped pad supported on the main portion of said apron and provided with an inwardly-directed extension directed toward said first-named extension.
10. A surgical operating-cushion embodying a flexible apron provided with an extension, a flange upon the main portion of said apron, a crescent shaped pad abutting against said flange and having its open portion dis osed toward said extension, and means or detachably retaining said pad against said flange.
11. A surgical operating-cushion embodying an apron, and a crescent-shaped cushion or pad supported thereon and provided at its intermediate portion with an inwardly-directed extension.
12. A surgical operating-cushion embodying a crescent-shaped pad provided at its intermediate portion with spaced inwardly-directed extensions.
13. A surgical operating-cushion comprising an apron having a trough-shaped extension and provided upon its main portion with a curved flange, a crescent-shaped cushion or pad abutting against said flange and having its open portion directed toward said extension, said cushion being provided with an intermediate extension, also directed toward the extension of said apron, and a plurality of retaining-loops in connection with said flange for retaining said cushion against the same.
In testimony that. I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ANTON o. EGGERS.
