Budweis, Austria-Hungary, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar-Piercers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in cigar-piercers of the kind described in the specification of British Letters Patent dated March 30, 1899, No. 6,958; and the invention consists, essentially, in an improved construction, whereby I am enabled to cheapen the cost of production by reducing the number of parts and by simplifying the manner in which they are assembled together. Cigarpiercers of the type referred to comprise a casing consisting of two tubular members sliding telescopically the one in the other, the one member terminating in a bell-shaped ori- `lice adapted to receive the tip of the cigar. As heretofore usually constructed such piercers have been provided with a tubular cutter mounted in a cutter-carrying tube and sliding in a guide-tube surrounded by a spiral spring, confined between the closed or shouldered ends of the two members. A core-ejector, consisting of a rod of circular cross-section, was fixed within and extending throughout the length of the guide-tube, so as, while remaining stationary in relation to the bellmouthed member,l to slide within the cutter and carrier-tubes, slots being provided in the latter for the passage of the cross-pin.

According to the present invention the piercer, in addition to the two tubular members of the casing normally held extended by a spring, as before, comprises a slotted tubular cutter, fixed within the rear end o f the inner member and fitted to slide through a guide-hole in the neck of the bell mouth, and a relatively short core-ejector integral with a lug passing through the slot in the cutter and through a lateral aperture in the outer member of the casing, whereby the ejector is fixed. j

By providing a cutter slotted as described I am enabled to dispense with the cutter-carrying and the guide tubes and to also employ a cheaper and more simple form of coreejector without in any way interfering with the efficiency of the instrument. l

In the improved piercer the bell-mouth, instead of being formed in a separate piece of metal screwed to or otherwise fixed to the outer member, is preferably formed in a suitably-shaped plug of wood or other suitable material incased in and forming a lining for the flaring end of the outer member of the casing. This plug, besides providing an abutment for the spiral spring, is easily shaped to meet the requirements of the instrument.

The invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings,wherein- Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section of the improved piercer, drawn to an enlarged scale, the two members being extended so that the cutter is in its normal retracted position. Fig. 2 is a separate view of the cutter, and Fig. 3 is a cross-section on line 3 3, Fig-1.

The outer member a terminates in and is made in one with a flaring end portion a', which is adapted to fit upon and incase a plug or lining a2 of wood or other suitable material having a central bore a3 opening outwardly into a bell-mouthed cavity ci, adapted to receive the tip of a cigar, the plug a2 being held in `position by the inwardlyturned edge a5 of the bell mouth. The tubular cutter c, which is fitted to slide through the bore al of the plug, is held in position within the member I) of the casing by the engagement with a collar or disk c', fixed on the rear end of the cutter, of a'circumferential groove b', formed around the rear end of the member The cutter c, which may consist of a strip of thin sheet-steel bent to a tubular form and tempered, has a longitudinal slot /L formedin one edge of the plate extending from its rear end to a point near the commencement of its cutting edges c2, which are formed by cutting away the end of the tube at an acute angle, sothat a sharp point c3 is presented to assist in penetrating the cigar.

I The core-ejector 0l, which is stationary in relation to the bell mouth consists, preferably, of aforWardly-projecting portion of a plate e, disposed in the axial plane-of the instrument, this plate passing through the slot t in the cutter-tube o and through the plug a2 and having -a lug f projecting laterally through a hole provided in the member a of the casing. The ejector is held in position TOO by the engagement of shoulders e' on the y plate e with the inner surface of the tubular member (o, while the projecting lug fhas a hole for the attachment of a ring f'. whereby the instrument may be fastened to a watchchain, if desired, the casing being preferably strengthened in rear of the lug f by a circumferential beading f2.

The ejector is so situated that its outward end is in line with (or slightly in rear of) the narrow end or throat of the bell mouth and with the point o3 of the cutter when the latter is retracted, the plate e being preferably grooved longitudinally on its opposite sides, as shown in Fig. 3, to receive the edges of the slot /L in the cutter-tube.

Encircling the cutter-tube c and confined between the collar c thereon and the rear end of the plug t2 is a helically-coiled spring g, which constantly tends to force the members a and Z2 apart, and thus to keep the several parts of the instrument in the normal position shownin Fig. 1.

In order to prevent the pressure of the spring g from forcing the members a and b asunder, the slot /r in the cutter-tube c eX- tends only so far toward its point c3 as to allow the latter to be retracted within the bore a3 of the plug, a circumferential beadingc' 'on member assisting in this by engaging with the inturned rear end fof the member c and the beading c' also coacting with another beading/n on the member b to preserve the two members a and in axial alinement with one another.

I claiml. A cigar-piercer of the kind specied, consistingin the combination with the two telescopically -slidable tubular members of the casing normallyheld extended bya spring, of a tubular longitudinally-slotted cutter carried by and slidable with the one member and adapted to work through a guide-aperture in and coaxial with the bell-mouthed outer eX- tremity of the other member, the slot of the tubular cutter near its outer end and a coreejector in the cutter-tube and held stationary with relation to the outer member by the engagement with a hole in said member of a laterally-projecting portion of the ejector passing outward through the slot in the cutter, substantially as described.

2. In a cigar-piercer of the kind specified, the combination with two telescoping tubular members, the outer member having a flaring outer end forming a bell-mouthed cavity for the reception of the cigar-tip, of a plug or lining of wood or other suitable material seated and held within the Haring end of the said outer member with its inner end forming an abutment, a collar in the inner tubular member, and a spring between the collar and abutment whereby the two members of the casing are `normally kept extended, substantially as described.

3. Acigar-piercer, comprising two telesoping tubular members, the outer member having a Haring outer end, a plug centrally apertured and having a bell-shaped mouth, in the flaring end of said outer member, a tubular cutter secured to the inner tubular member and sliding in the bore of the plug, said cutter having a longitudinal slot terminating short of its outer end, a spring surrounding the cutter between a stop thereon and the plug of the outer member, a plate secured in slots in the outer member and its plug, the inner end of the plate being reduced and extending through the slot of the tubular cutter, and an ejector secured to the inner reduced end of the said plate, within the tubular cutter, substantially as described.

4. In a cigar-piercer, the combination with two telescoping and spring-pressed members, the outer member having a flaring outer end, of a tubular cutter secured to the inner member and projecting into the outer member, the cutter being provided with a longitudinal slot terminating short of its outer end, and an ejector in the tubular cutter and having a member extending out through the slot thereof and secured to the outer telescoping member, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

5. In a cigar-piercer, the combination with two telescoping and spring-pressed members, the outer member having a flaring outer end and provided with a centrally-apertured plug secured in'said end, said outer member and block being provided with lateral openings, of a tubular cutter secured to the inner member and projecting into the central aperture of the plug, said cutter being provided with a longitudinal slot terminating short of its outer end, and an ejector in the tubular cutter and provided with a member extending through the lateral openings of the plug and outer member.
