Description
A. D] RUBBIO Aug. 8, 1944.
Filed March 12, 1943 I I I I l l lllwnn.) w FEIlLLI fi l /r/A HIIIIHHIIIHMHMHML 1 m r w w N MN N 2 m m "M \N R NW \0 I m. -m IJIIIIH RN m v III, 5,1 I I 'm 0 i 0 Q o o 0 m m m I, rm w Inventor ejector detached Patented Aug. 8, 1944 My invention relates to improvements in cigarette holders, the primary object in view being to provide a device of the character indicated equipped with a, simple form of cigarette butt ejector which is easy to operate, dependable, will not easily wear out or get out of order, and is inexpensive to manufacture either as a separate part or as a unitarypart of the holder.
Other and subordinate objects are also comprehended by my invention, all of which, together with the precise nature of my improvements, will be readily understood when the succeeding description and claims are read with reference to the drawing accompanying and forming part of this specification.
In said drawing: a
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of-my-improved cigarette holder,
Figure 2 is a view in longitudinal section, taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a view in front end elevation,
Figure 4 is a view in rear end elevation,
Figure 5 is a view in transverse section, taken on the line 5-5 of re 1, and
Figure 6 is a view in longitudinal section of the and drawn to an enlarged scale, the section being taken on the line 5-6 of Figure 2. Referring to the drawing by numerals, my improved cigarette holder in the preferred illustrated embodiment thereof comprises a mouth bit I having an enlarged outer cylindrical end 2 and a reduced front end stem 3 formed with a flared terminal 6 ribbed, as at 5, to facilitate holding the stem in the mouth. The outer end of the holder i has formed therein an axial socket 6 for the insertion therein of a butt end of a cigarette l. Inner and outer armular slots 8, 9
are provided in the outer end of the holder I concentrically of the bore 6 for the reception of inher and outer, perforated, tubular guard shells I0, I! for enclosing the cigarette 7 to protect the same and guard against fire hazard arisin from fiying sparks of the cigarette. The outer ends of the shells in, H are connected together by an axial bolt l2, a nut l3, and a spacing collar Hi, the bolt 52 extending through a cap piece l5. The shells I0, and the parts l5 form no part of the present invention and need merely be identified in passing. Sumce it to further explain that said shells l0, H are detachable from the mouth bit i to permit insertion of a cigarette 'i in the socket 6 and when it is desired to eject a cigarette butt from said socket.
The butt ejector, with which l2, [3, M and my invention is more particularly concerned, comprises a tubu lar ejector sleeve l6 and a sleeve-operating plunger rod ll of tubular form and relatively longer than the ejector sleeve I6. The ejector sleeve I 6 and the sleeve-operating plunger I! may be formed of any suitable material. The ejector sleeve is endwise slidable in an axial bore l8 provided in the mouth bit I to extend in-' wardly from the socket 6 part way through said bit, said bore l8 being smaller in diameter than said socket for a purpose presently seen. The
outer end of the ejector sleeve I6 is provided with an annular radial flange l9 slidably fitting in the socket 6 and, as will presently more clearly appear, designed to be thrust against the butt end of the cigarette l. A longitudinally extending bayonet slot 20 is provided in the ejector sleeve i8, said slot having a pair of front and rear end notches 203,2! extending laterally from opposite sides thereof, respectively. At the front end thereof the ejector sleeve is is provided with an internal annular flange zz forming a restricted smoke draft opening 23 in the front end of said sleeve.
The sleeve-operating plunger I1 is endwise slidable. and rotatable in a counterbore 25 in the mouth bit i extending axially from the inner end of the bore I8 to the terminal end of the stem 3 of said mouth bit and is slidably fitted in the ejector sleeve it. The inner end of the sleeve-operating plunger I1 is provided thereon with a flanged, axially bored cap piece 26 suitably secured on said end to fit in a socket 25 in the mouth bit I. The flange of the cap piece 26 is designed to abut the terminal 5 of the stem 3 of the mouth bit I to limit sliding movement of the sleeve-operating plunger ll inwardly of said mouth bit, and provides a finger grip for use in manipulating said operating plunger. The sleeve-operating plunger i1 is of the proper length to extend into the ejector sleeve it past the outer end of the slot 20 when said operating plunger and said ejector sleeve are disposed in their limits of movement inwardly of the mouth bit i. ejector sleeve 16 is established by a shoulder 21 formed in the mouth bit l by the juncture of the bore l8 with the counterbore 24. As best shown in Figures 2 and 6, in theinward limit of movement'of the ejector sleeve l6 and said operating plunger H, a lateral lug 28 on the outer end of the operating plunger is laterally aligned with the outer end notch 20' of the slot 20 and may be rotated into said notch to interlock the The limit Of inward movement of the the other end of the slot ejector sleeve I8 and sleeve-operating plunger l1 against movement outwardly oi the mouth bit I. The operation of the described butt ejector will be readilyunderstood. In the described interlocked condition or the ejector sleeve l6 and the operating plunger H, the flange IQ of said ejector sleeve is retracted into the socket 6 so that a cigarette 1 may be inserted in said socket. To eject the cigarette butt, theoperating plunger 11 is rotated i the. proper,. direction, through the medium the outer end notch 20' into unlocking position. Said operating plunger may then be moved outwardly oi the mouth bit I until said lug 28 abuts 20, in which position thereof said operating plunger may be rotated in the proper direction to enter the lug 28 into an IQ toftnove the'lug'ldout oi 1. A cigarette holder comprising a mouth blt having an outer cigarette-holding end provided with an axial socket therein for the insertion oi the butt end of a cigarette thereunto, a butt ejector sleeve endwise slidable in said bit'in the axis thereof in opposite directions for projection outwardly 01 said socket and retraction into the bit inwardly of the socket, and means to advance and retract said sleeve, comprising a tubular plunger, enwise ,slidableinwardly' and outwardly orfltii' other endoi saldf bit in the aiiis thereof and including a flanged'end abutting said other end or said bit to establish the limit of inward sliding movement of the plunger, said plunger being also rotatable in said bit, and coacting deviceson said sleeve and plunger, respectively.
the inner end notch 2| of the slot 20. In this v1 position of the parts, the operating plunger T11 is interlocked withlthe ejector sleeve IS in a manner such that under movement ofsaid plunger inwardly oi the mouth bit I, the ejector sleeve I. will be the socket 8 to eject the cigarette butt from said socket. The operating plunger l1 may then again be moved outwardly of the mouth bit I to retractthe'ejector sleeve I8 against the shoulder -21 and then rotated in the proper direction to retract the lug 28 from the inner end notch 2| .01 slot I! so that said operating plunger-may be then moved inwardly oi the mouth bit I into its limit of inward movement and again interlocked with the ejector sleeve It by rotating the same to enter the lug 28 in the outer end notch 2.0 oi the slot 20.
. .Theioregoing will, it is believed, suffice to impart a clear understanding of my invention without further explanation.
Manifestly, the invention, as described, is susceptjible of modification without departing from the.inventive concept, and right. is herein re-' served to such modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
slid outwardly of said bit, and
for interlocking the plunger with opposite end portions, 01' the sleeve under rotation of the plunger in opposite directions, respectively.
