To all whom it may concern;

Be it known that I, REINHOLD T. PETRICH, a c1t1zen of the United States, residing at Enderlin, in the county of Ransom and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wagon-Hounds and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as Will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to draw-irons for vehicles and its object is to provide a device of this character which is formed in a single piece of metal and which serves to securely fasten a tongue to the hounds of a vehicle.

A still further object is to provide novel means for bracing the draw-iron so as to prevent the same from buckling or becoming otherwise misshapen through lateral pull or strain thereon.

With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of a strap bent to form a transversely-extending intermediate portion and forwardlyextending arms terminat ing in clamping extensions adapted to be fastened to opposite sides of a vehicle-tongue. A socket is adjustably connected to the intermediate portions and constitutes a seat for the end of the tongue. A bracing device extends through the hounds and serves to clamp them upon the draw-iron, and. this bracing device has means for reinforcing it, so as to prevent the draw-iron from twisting when subjected to lateral strain.

The invention also consists of the further novel construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings I have shown the preferred form of my invention.

In said drawings, Figure 1 is aplan view of my improved draw-iron and the parts connected thereto, the socket and portions of the draw-iron being shown in section; and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the socket and draw-iron, showing the tongue in elevation.

Referring to the figures by numerals of reference, 1 is the transversely-extending intermediate portion of a draw-iron, and the same has integral arms 2 at its ends, which taper toward each other and terminate in angular extensions 3, the ends for which are parallel and are adapted to be secured to opposite sides of a tongue 5 by means of bolts 6 or in any other preferred manner. The end of the tongue is disposed within a socket 7, which conforms to the contour of said end, and has slots 8 1n the end wall thereof, which receive the heads of bolts 9, mounted within the intermediate portion 1 of the draw-iron. By means of these bolts 9 a socket can be clamped in any position to which it is adjusted. The slots 8 permit lateral adjustment of the socket, so that the same can be accurately disposed so as to receive the end of the tongue. Hounds 10 are arranged upon the outer faces of the arms 2 and are clamped thereon by a rod 11, the ends of which are threaded, as shown at 12, and extend through arms 2 and hounds 10. A collar 13 is mounted on the rod 11 and contacts with the inner face of each of the arms 2, and these collars are secured to the arms by means of integral pins 14, which extend into apertures in the arm 2 and are upset, as shown in detail in Fig. 1. As these collars fit tightly on the rod 11 and are secured to the arms 2, it will be understood that they act as reinforces at the points of connection between the rod and arms and brace the draw iron against buckling or twisting sidewise When subjected to lateral strain. Moreover, nuts 15 are located on the threaded portions 12 of the rod 11 and serve to tightly clamp the hounds upon the arms 2.

By means of my improvements a tongue can be tightly connected to a vehicle and 1s held against displacement.

It will be understood that the complete draw iron is formed in a single length of metal, and therefore there are no partsto become displaced or lost.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination with hounds and a tongue disposed therebetween; of a drawiron interposed between the hounds and secured to the tongue, a socket adjustably secured upon the draw-iron and constituting a seat for one end of the tongue, and means for securing the hounds to the draw-iron.

2. The combination with a tongue and hounds at opposite sides thereof; of a drawiron interposed between the hounds and formed in a single length of metal, said drawiron consisting of an intermediate portion, arms at the ends thereof and angular extensions within the arms, means for clamping the extensions upon opposite sides of the tongue, a socket adjustably secured to the ate portion and constituting a seat for the tongue, a brace extending transversely of 15 the iron through the arms, and reinforcing means upon the brace and contacting With and secured to the arms.
