Description

PATENTED DEC. 12, 1905. S. N. MURDOGK.
SMOKE BELL HANGER.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL N. MURDOOK, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN J. GALLAGHER, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 12, 1905.
Application filed July 31, 1905. Serial No. 271,999.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL N. MURDocK, a citizen of the United States, residing at C0- lumbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Smoke-Bell Hangers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in hangers for supporting smoke-bells above the burners or lamps upon a chandelier or the like.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, durable, and comparatively inexpensive device of this character which may be quickly and easily applied to either the stem or the main pipe of a chandelier and from which any number of smoke-bells may be supported in any desired position.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a three-burner chandelier, showing my improved hanger applied thereto and the smoke-bells supported from the same above-the burners. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the plane indicated by the line 2 2 in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view'of the clamping-band of the hanger removed from the chain; and Fig. 4 is a detail plan view, on an enlarged scale, of one end of the clamping-band.
Referring to the drawings by numeral, 1 denotes a chandelier, which may be of any desired form and construction, and 2 denotes smoke-bells which are supported above the burners of the chandelier by my improved hanger 3. This hanger consists of a band 4, which is adapted to be clamped upon the stem, the main pipe, or any other portion of a chandelier or the like, and a plurality of supporting-arms 5, which are detachably connected to the clamping-band 4 and adapted to support the smoke-bells 2. The clamp-- ing-band 4 is made from a strip of metal by forming in it transversely-extending parallel corrugations 6 and by cutting away or recessing, as shown at 7, the upper end of each of the projecting portions of the corrugations, so as to form parallel stop-shoulders 8. Each of the projecting portions of the corrugations, 6 forms a socket between it and the stem or pipe of the chandelier to receive the rightangularly-bent end 9 on one of the supporting-arms 5. These ends 9 are adapted to snugly fit said corrugations, and their rightangularly-projectedcportions 10 are adapted to enter between an engage the shoulders 8, so as to prevent the arms 5 from swinging or turning. These arms 5 may be of any desired form and construction; but as shown they are curved or bowed longitudinally and have upon their outer ends hooks 11, which are adapted to engage eyes upon the bells 2. The band 4 may be clamped upon the chandelier in any desired manner; but I preferably bend its ends outwardly to form parallel lugs 12 and form the latter with alining openings 13, one of which is screw-threaded to engage screw-threads upon a screw 14, which passes loosely through the other. It will be seen that when the screw 14 is turned in the proper direction the ends or lugs 12 will be drawn together to firmly clamp the band in any desired osition upon thechandelier. Owing to the act that the corrugations 6 are numerous and arranged entirely around the chandelier, any desired number of the arms 5 may be employed, and they may be adjusted so that the bells will hang directly above the burners of the chandelier. 3
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without re quiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A smoke-bell hanger for chandeliers or the like, comprising a clamping-band, a screw for clamping the'ends of said band upon a chandelier or the like, transversely-extending parallel corrugations formed in said band and having their projecting portions at one end cut away to form stop-shoulders, and a In testimony whereof I have hereunto set supporting-arm having a smoke-be1l-engag my hand in presence of tWo subscribing Wit- [0 ing hook at one end and an angu1ar1y-bent nesses.
portion at its opposite end adapted to enter 5 one of the corrugations in said band and to SAMUEL MURDOCK' engage said shoulders, whereby it will be pre- W1tnesses: vented from turning, substantially as (16- JOHN J. GALLAGHER,
