Description
, UNITED sTATEs oFFIoE.
l' ARTHUR L. Moolen, or srninerinnn"MAssAcHUsETTs l BohT-CLIPPEB'L To (1r/'ZZ whom, t may concern:
\ Be. .it known that I, ARTHUR L. MOORE, a citizen ofthe United States of America, and a resident oi' Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of' Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bolt- Glippers,of which the following is afull, clear,
and exact description. i
This invention relates to: lmprovements'in boltclippers of the well-known class which comprises compound levers, one pair thereof being handle-levers and theother pair the cut- 1 ter or die carrying levers; and the invention particularly relates to bolt-clippers of the general class indicated, which includes adjustinglevers jointed'to the cutter-carrying levers and means for positioning the adjusting-levers to compensate for the wear or grinding away of the cutters.'`
The object of this lnvention is to provide a specific, new, eflicient, and desirable construction `of the adjusting-levers and the combinainvention consists inthe particular construction therewith o f the handle-levers, the means for confining the parts in their adjustable relations, and also means Yfor aecting movements of the parts for most conveniently effecting the adjustments; and to these ends the tions and combinations for larrangements of parts, all substantially as hereinafter fully described, and set forth in the claims.
` In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side View of the bolt-clipper, the long handles of which andaportion of one of the adjusting-levers-being shown as broken out. Fig. 2 is a vertical lsection taken through theadj'usting-lever .pivot on line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an inner or reversed side View of'one of thekadjusting-levers. Fig. 4 isa perspective.
view of certain parts 'of the bolt-clipper coml prised in the present inventionl shown as in the pivotof said hinge is indicated byV a.
semicircular sldewise-open recess. or depre s' separated relations.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views;-
In the drawings thehandles A A, which are of considerable length, are shown as broken away quite near their hinged end portions, and
sion Bis formed in the handles A, near their pivot a, in which iits the semicircular end portion C of the adjusting-lever D. This end por: tion C'of the adjusting-lever has formed therethrough a concentrically-located square hole d, and centrally located in the semicirc'ular de- Specicaton of Letters Patent.
'Application filed April 24, 1905. Serial No. 257,233..
Patented Dec. 5, 1905.
. ,pression B is a round hole c, somewhat larger than thesquare hole 0l in the lever'end C.
A pivot-bolt E has a head e. thereon and a round portion c', whichis of the same length and diameter, respectively, as the hole c in which it its. A square portion d of the bolt is of the same dimension cross-sectional for a close fit'as the square hole d in the-adju'stingtion of the bolt is slightly less than the thickness ofthe said lever. A round screw-threaded portion f of the bolt extends beyond the square portion d thereof for a distance equal to the thickness of' a nut f, which is provided for and has-a screw engagement therewith. Be-
lever, although the length of such square porf yond this roundand threaded portion the bolt j terminates'in a square portion X of somewhat reduced diameter .and of sufficient length to receive the engagement of an ordinarywrench.
The inner flat wall H of the depression B in each handle is provided with radial serrations or ne teeth h, as seen in Figs. 1 and 4, and the contactingr face of lever end C has simion the adjusting of the lever D a slight loosening of the nut f permits suiiicient separation of the adjacent tooth-provided surfacesV H and I, permitting a rotational movement of the round portion Ic' of bolt E in the hole c in handle A, thereby permitting swinging from 'this center of the adjusting-lever D through the engagement of its square hole d with the square portion 0l of bolt E.
A The free end portions of the duplicated adjusting-levers D have formed thereon the earlugs y g, between which an end portion, re-
duced-inthicliness, of the cutting-lever jaws J are jointed by pivotsjl The cutting-jaw levers J are held in pivotal relations to each other by the links K and their pivot connections k k to the end that a movement of the adjusting-levers D relatively to the handles A causes a corresponding change in the relation of the cutting-jaws L to the handles, thereby compensating for wear or any grinding away by a quickly-operated take-up thereof. The operation of performing such atakeup or. adjustment of parts consists in loosening the nut f', permitting thereby the free swinging of lever D on its bolt-center E, the
lar teeth e', (see Figs. 1, 3, and 42,) whereby -4 ioocontrol of said swinging adjustment being easily acquired by a wrench engagementof the square bolt end X on the completion of the desired adjustment in the above-manner, and a tighteningof the nut f' on bolt F draws IIO together the roughened or toothed surfaces of the handles and adjusting-levers, respectively and thus firmly locks the same against any independent movements.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a bolt-clipper, the combination with the handle-levers, pivotally connected at their forward extremities and provided adjacent the pivotal connection with sidewise-open recesses having circular serrated bases and partiallycircular edge walls, and having peri'orations transversely and concentrically therethrough, of the cutter-provided levers, and the adjusting-levers, jointed thereto, and having partially-circular extremities and serrated faces, fitted in the said recesses and engaging with the serrated inner walls thereof, and a bolt transversely extending'through the handlelevers and said adjacent levers, headed at one end, and threaded, and provided with a binding nut, at its other extremity.
2. In a bolt-clipper, the handle-levers, pivotally connectedat their forward extremities and provided adjacent to and rearwardly of the pivotal connection with sidewise-open recesses having circular serrated bases and partially -circular edge walls, and having the round perforations c transversely and concentrically therethrough, the cutter-provided levers, and adjusting-leversjointed thereto and having partially-circular extremities and serrated faces, itted in the recesses and engaging with the serrated inner walls thereof, and also having the squared hole d therethrough, and the bolt transversely extending through the handle-levers and said adjacent levers, constructed with the end head, the cylindrical portion c', the squared portion rl', the cylindrical portionf, of reduced diameter, and constructed for engagement by a rotating implement, and the nut, all arranged and interengaged substantially as described and for the purposes set forth.
Signed by me at Springlield, Massachusetts, in presence of two subsclibing witnesses.
ARTHUR L. MOORE.
