KNIFE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 5, 1905.
Application filed December 2'], 1904. Serial No. 238.533.
ton, Province of Ontario, Canada, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Knives, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention pertains to improvements in knives, the construction and advantages of which will be hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the annexed drawings,
Figure 1 is a perspective viewof the knife; Fig. 2, a top plan viewthereof; Fig. 3, atransverse sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 a sectional view of a modified form of construction.
The object of theinvention is to produce a knife especially adapted to the uses and needs of hunters, soldiers, fishermen, and sailors and which may be employed in both light'and heavy work, such as it is sometimes necessary for them to perform.
The knife hereinafter set forth in detail may be said to comprise a thick and a thin portion I having a common or continuous cutting edge,
the thick portion *l yingadjacent to the handle and by preference being wedge 4 shaped in cross-section.
Referring to Figs. 1 to 3 of the drawings, A denotes the handle of the knife, which may be of any desired form; B, the thick wedgeshaped portion of theblade, which lies immediately adjacentto the handle, and C the thin portion of the blade. As just noted, the thick portion is wedge-shaped in cross-section, (see Fig. 3,) the cutting edge thereof being a continuation of the cutting edge. of the thin por- The upper edge of the lies in a plane with the upper edge of the thin portion. In other words, the back of the blade is continuous, though this of course is not essential. The thickened portion-may be formed upon either side of the medial line of the blade, or, if desired, both sides of said portion may be inclined, as indicated in the cross-section shown in Fig. 4, in whichD is the thick wedge-shaped portion and E the thinportion, the latter appearing in section.
As will be noted upon reference to Figs. 1 and 2, the Wedge-shaped or thickened section of a substantially continuous blade.
' Witnesses:
the blade passes or tapers into the thin portion by a curve. This construction obviates any sharp angles, thereby enabling the knife to be readily cleaned, and likewise presents I .The thick wedge-shaped portion affords means with which wood maybe split or a limb of an animal cut off, the broad back presenting a surface which may be struck in order to forge T e the blade through the objectbeing cut. thin section of the blade may be used for a variety of purposes, such as cutting meat, bread, &c., or for skinning animals. Thus it will be seen that a knife constructed as herein set forth is superior to an ordinary thick or thin bladed knife, being capable of doing all the work of these two forms combined, while the thin portion may be made thinner than could otherwise be done'if the knife were intended to be used for general purposes, and thus all the advantages which arise from such a blade are secured.
As will be readily appreciated, the knife above described provides a Weapon which is suitable for purposes of offense or defense, as occasion may require.
Having thus described my invention, what- I claim is shaped portion having a sharp edge and a relatively wide, flat hack free to befstruck a blow; and a thin portion extending from the thick portion, said thin portion likewise havi-nga'cutting'edge formed as a continuation of the cutting edge of the wedge-shaped portion. I
2. .A. knife provided with a thickwwedgeshaped portion with a thin portion extending therefrom, the cutting edges of the two sections being continuous.
3. A knife comprising a handle and a blade, the blade having a thick wedge-shapedportion adjacent to the handle and presenting a broad back, and a relatively thin portion extending therefrom, the cutting edge of the blade being continuous.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES E. W. CURRIER.
I E. PELLETIER,
S. R. LoFTUs.
