THIRDS TO WADE M. FINN, or SAME PLACE, AND JOHN B. SHANNON, or OABBONDALE, PENNSYLVANIA,
KNIFIE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 634,621, dated October 10, 1899. Application filed July 14, 1899; Serial No. 723,843. (No model.) i
To all whom, it mag concern.-
Be it known thatI, SAMUEL H. JONES, a citi- "zen of the United States, residing at Scranton in the county of Lackawanna and State of Pennsylvania, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Knives, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved form of knife intended for general household use, the novel aud useful features of which are pointed out in the following specification and claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is a side perspecedges 1 and 2 on its opposite sides and a 1011-' gitudinal opening 3 in the center, which separates the main part of the blade into two narrow cutting strips or blades 4 and 5. The
side walls 6 and 7 of the opening converge gradually from the butt-end 8 toward the forward end 9, the opening being inclined to the body of the blade, as shown, so that the strip 4: is broader at the butt-end than at the forward end, while the strip 5 is wider at the forward end than at the butt-end. The forward end 9 of the blade as a whole is inclined away from the cutting edge 2 and toward the cutting edge 1, the former edge curving grad uall y outward toward the point 10, as shown, and
thelatter having an inclined portion 11, which l extends from about the end of the strip 4 to the point 1O.v
The cuttingedge 2 is designed particularly for cutting raw meat. In cutting steaks, for
instance, from a section of beef the skilled operator always draws the knife toward him. i It is desirable, therefore, to have the forward j portion of the cutting edge 2 curved back-. ward, as shown at 12, and as the wear on this edge occurs principally at the forward part than the forward part.
for which the of the knife the inclination of the tapering opening leaves the forward end of the taper ing strip 5 wide enough to allow for consid- It is also found advantageous erable wear.
have a narrow stifi blade.
for this purpose to By my improvements a narrow blade or cutting-strip 5 is provided, and it is rendered rigid by its connection at the forward end with the strip-t.
The cutting edge 1 is designed for use in cutting bread, cake, pastry, (be; This edge is suitable for the back-and-forth motion generallyemployedin cutting bread, the inclined part 1]. cutting the crustfon the side away from the operator as the knife is drawn toward him, making a clean cut and the rear part of the'blade cutting the crust upon the near side. In the use of this side of the knife the cnttingis mainly effected upon the forward thrust, so that the rear part of the strip at wears faster than the forward part, and hence the rear part of the stri p is made wider In dividing pastry the knife is drawn toward the operator and the inclined edge 11 cuts through the body of the material, the point 10 making a clean cut through the lower crust to the bottom of the pan or disln The blade A is about the width of the ordi so that it is naturally.
nary bread knife, guided in a straight line through any stiff thick material, such as bread, which does not fall away from the blade as rapidly as the knife'is drawn through it, while the strip 5 is as narrowas is found necessary for cutting raw meats which naturally separate and fall down after each cut. The opening in the center of the blade lightens and cheapens the construction, and the tapering walls of the opening are also convenient for the purpose of tightening and loosening nuts of various sizes,
the knife thus serving as a wrench. When not in use, the knife may be suspended upon the wall by passing, the blade over a nail or hook, so that the latter will project through the opening. In addition to the special uses knife is designed it is obvious that it may be employed for many other purposes.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. In a knife for household use, a knifeblade having its forward end inclined to the main or body portion, cutting edges extending throughout the length of the blade on either side and meeting at the point, the center of the blade being removed so as to leave narrow cutting-strips 4E and 5 in the main portion of the blade, substantially as described.
2. In a knife for household use, a knifebladehavingcuttingedges extending throughout the length of the blade on either side, and a longitudinal opening in the body of the blade, said opening being inclined and dividing the blade into two tapering strips 4 and 5, substantially as described.
In a knife for household use, a knifeblade having its forward end inclined to the main or body portion, cuttingedges extending throughout the length of the blade on either side and meeting at the point, and a longitutdinal tapering opening 3 in the body of the In testimony whereof I affix my signature 35 in presence of two Witnesses.
