Be it known that I, JOHNV GooDnNOUGI-I, of Jerseyville, in the county of Jersey, andState et" Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Blacking-Brushcs; and I do hereby declare that lthe following isa full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. i i l This invention relates to an improvement in blacking-brushes, and' consistsin attachinga scraper to an ordinary brush for the purpose of removing the dirt from the boot or shoe, it being so attached as tobe entirely out of the way, excepting when iniuse, as will be fully described hereinafter. In the drawings, A represents a blacking-bru'shof the usual form, with a handle. y u

B representsthe scraper, which is attached to the brush by'means of the rod B', as shown. The rod is fixed at one end, being bent at right angles at b, and passed through the handle of the brush, near its centre,

in which position it is securely riveted to prevent displacement. The-rod, however, turns backward or forward easily upon the crank thus formed.

At b1, the rod is again bent at right angles in a contrary direction, and again at I, as shown, by which means the straight part, Z13, of the rodd is brought inline with the centre of Vthe brush longitudinally.'

which arrangement the point x2 is made, and a straight edge at 'm3, The upper side in this position (which is the lower side when the rod is turned forward) is cut away, as shown, and has the curve z* and hook x5; This curve corresponds with the curve of the handle, where the'scraper restsrwhen turned forward.

From this description the manner of using my invention will bc easily understood. 1

When the brush is used in the ordinary manner, the scraper is securely held, by the hook 2:5,- close-down upon the centre of the brush.. In this position it is entirely out of the way, and in no way4 interferes with the operation oi' brushing. When, however, it is desired to use the scraper, therod 'B' is sprung aside sufleiently' far to permitl the red :e5 to slip from its place. v Y

The. rod is then turned backward until the bend bl b2 springs into the notch c. The scraper is then ready for nse. Its edges of different forni makeit convenient touse for every part of the boot orshoe. An extremely simple and eiiicient combination is thus made. y

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure byLcttcrs Patent, is-

'Ihe scraper E, provi-ded with therhook :v", straight and curving'edges :e :al z3, and attached at right angles to the rod B, as shown, the latter being bent at 'b b b2, and fastened to handle of brush A, as shown and described,

the rod and scraper being so operated in' connection with thc handle, that 'when neededV foruse the former is turned' forward and iirmly held by the notch le, and whcn'not needed may be turned'backward and held by the hook z, catching in the socket in the hand-le, as herein fully sct-forth.- Y
