l Be it known that I, FRITZ SCHULZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in
provide a simple, efficient, adjustable device of this character; and it ,consists in the features ofk construction and combinations 'of parts hereinafter fully described and'claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention, Figure 1 'is a central longitudinal section of alifting-tongs constructed iii-accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail transverse section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
My invention has for its particular object to provide a lifting-tongs which is exceedingly cheap and -durable and which can be readily adjusted to grasp objects of various widths. To this end I provide a pair of tongs A and B, both of which are made of sheet metal bent so as `to give said tongs a U- f shaped form in cross-section, theflang'es thereof thus serving as reinforcing-ribs to render the tongs exceedingly stiff... Each of said tongs is substantially L-shaped, the shorter arms C and D thereof forming jaws between which the object to be lifted is adapted to be clamped. Secured at one end to said jaw D, adjacent the inner end thereof, is a chain E,
the free end of which passes through a sleeve F, mounted in said jaw C of the member A and between the prongs of a forkr, secured to the latter, and which is adapted to engage said chain to determine the relative positions of said tongs, the point of juncture `of said chain E with the jaw D and the'mouth of the sleeve F forming substantially fulcrums upon 4 which said jawsturn. The said longer arms H and J of said members A and B are then grasped in both hands on either side of the fulcrum K of said member B. By tightening the hold on the free end portion of the arm HA ofthe member A and releasing the pressure on the free end of. the arm J of the member B said free end portion of the arm H will be de ressed into said arn'LJ and the j aws'C an D thereof opened preparatory to ricks or other object to be lifted. After said jaws have been so inserted the pressure on the free end of the arm H is released and the tongs lifted by the fre-e end of the arm J of said member B, such action serving first to contract said jaws Lto engage` such bricks or other object and causing the latter to be lifted with said tongs, the weight of the obj ect itself serving to hold said jaws firmlyengaged, the pressure eX- erted byl said jaws belng greater as the weight f of the kbricks or object lifted increases.
The device is verycheap, light, durable,`
simple, and efficient.
I claim as my invention- 1. AV lifting tongs ycomprising two jaw members movable telescopically relatively to eachother, a chain or the like connecting said members and serving to limit their relative movement in one direction, and serving at its point of juncture with said jaw members as fulcrums upon which the latter turn.

A llifting tongs comprising two L- IOO two L- le te esco ically relatively to each other, a chain or the ike secured to the jaw portion of one member and adapted to engage looking means on the other thereof to hold saidmembers against relative movement in one direction and serve as fulorums upon which said jaw portions turn, the interlitting portions of said ineinbers forming stems for actuating said jaw portions to turn the same, and one of said stem portions being provided between its ends With a fulcrum upon which the other stein turns.
