To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER'MANUELWISE, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Continuous Writing- Tablets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to,
make and use the same.
This mvention relates to certain new and useful improvements in mechanisms for feeding a sheet or strip of material automatically upon a writing-surface.
The object of the invention is to construct a simple automatic sheet-feeding mechanism which is efficient in operation, as well as durable in construction. Said mechanism'may be attached to any. existing writing-surface, such as a desk or battery-box, to permit of the paper to be fed thereupon.
Another object of the invention is to improve the construction of adevice which is adapted to automatically feed'a sheet of paper upon a hard surface.
A still further object of the invention is to construct a spring-actuated mechanism, which is manually controlled, for the purpose of supplyinga sheet of material continuously upon a suitable writing-surface. With these and other objects in viewthe invention consists in certain novel constructions.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a mechanism constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is an elevated fragmentary front view of the mechanism depicted in Fig. 1.
In carrying out the present invention I have constructed a mechanism which is adapted for the purpose offeedi-ng paper more particularly to the small desk over the battery-box of the usual telephone outfit; but this invention is applicable to any desk, counter, or any place where paper is used for memoranda.
This mechanism is also adapted to be employed as a toilet-paper holder.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a casing which comprises in its construction par- '20. The roll 7 is in mounted the gearing mechanism for controlling movement of rolls 5, 6, and 7, which are mounted on the inner vertical plates 3 of the casing 1.
The gearing or spring-motor mechanism comprlses 1n 1ts construction ashaft 8, which "is journaled in plates 2 and 3. Mounted upon shaft 8 is a gear-wheel 9, to which is secured at one of its ends a power-spring 10. The opposite end of the power-spring 10 is secured to shaft 8. An inclosing housing 11 is secured to gear-wheel 9 for the purpose of forming a protecting-casing for spring 10. A shaft 12, upon which is mounted roll '6, is journaled in the parallel plates 2 and 3 above shaft 8 and is provided with a pinion 13, which meshes with cog-wheel 9. A cam 14 is keyed upon shaft 12 adjacent to plate 3 within the compartment 4. A releasekey or dog 15 is journaled upon plate 3 within the compartment4 and is normally held in engagement with cam 14 by means of a spring 16, which is secured at '17 to plate 3 within the compartment 4. The rubber-coated feed-roll 6 is mounted upon thepaper-roll 5, but is not normally in engagement with the same. A notch 20 is formed upon the upper edge of each plate 3, providing sockets or receiving means for the spindles 21 of the auxiliary feed-r0117. The roll 7 is detachably mounted upon the casing within the sockets frictional engagement with roll 6.

An aperture also must be formed upon the cover, through which the outer projection of the releasing-key 15 will be permitted to project, so that the operation of the driving mechanism may be controlled from the outside of the casing 1.
When the mechanism is in the position shown in Fig. 1, the same is locked against If it is desired to discharge the sheet from the roll 5 between rolls 6 and 7 and upon the writing-surface, it will be necessary to cause movement of the finger-engaging portion 25, which is threaded at 26 upon the pawl 15, thereby moving said pawl or member 15 upon its pivot, raising the hooked end 18 from engagement with cam 14, permitting of the potential energy stored in the power-spring to be exerted upon the gearwheel 9, consequently causing rotary movement of pinion 13, which is keyed to shaft 12. When rotary movement is imparted to shaft 12, similar movement is also imparted to rolls 6 and 7, respectively. If a sheet of paper is supplied to rolls 6 and 7 and fed between the same, the roll 7, which is in frictional contact with the roll 6', will cause the paper to be fed onto the writing-surface as movement is imparted to shaft 12. As soon as a sufiicient amount of paper has been fed through the rolls 6 and 7 upon a writing-surface or the like to lock the mechanism it will be necessary to release pawl 15, the hooked end 18 of which will be caused 'to move into engagement with cam member 14 and to positively lock shaft 12 against rotary movement as soon as the hooked end 18 comes in contact with the shouldered or projecting portion of cam 14. The locking of the shaft 12 against rotary movement also prevents similar movement of gear-wheel 9, and consequently prevents the exertion of the powerspring to cause movement of the rolls.
When it is desired to wind the spring, it will be necessary to apply at the squared portion 27 of shaft 8 a key or the like for imparting rotary 'movement to the shaft 8. Keyed upon an extension of shaft 8' and between the plate 3 and the paper-roll 5 is a pinion 28, which is normally engaged by the pawl 29. The pawl 29 is pivotally mounted upon the plate 3. Owing to the construction of the pinion 28 and pawl 29, rotary movement is only imparted to shaft 8 in one direction, such movement being manually imparted to shaft 8 by a key or the like.
While I have described in the foregoing description and depicted in the accompanying drawings the preferred construction of my invention, it will be obvious to one versed in the art to which this invention relates that certain alterations, modifications, and changes may be made, and I therefore reserve the right to make such alterations, modifications,
and changes as shall fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the present invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent. is
1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a casing, of a sheet-supplying roll carried thereby, a plurality of rolls journaled upon said casing above said supplying-roll, a gearing mechanism carried by said casing, comprising a shaft, a gearwheel loosely mounted upon said shaft, a coiled spring secured to said shaft at one end and to said gear-wheel at the opposite end, an extension projecting from one of said rolls above the supplying-roll, a pinion secured to said extension and meshing with said gearwheel, means for winding said coiled spring and retaining the same in a locked position, a cam provided with a shouldered portion keyed to the extension of said roll, a release-key pivotally mounted upon said casing and normally in engagement with said cam, and means for normally retaining said key in locking engagement with said cam.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a casing, of a supplyroll journaled in said casing, a pair of rolls positioned above said supply-roll, a springmotor secured to said casing and connected in an operative position with one of said pair of rolls, said spring-motor capable of causing continuous rotary movement of said pair of rolls for feeding a sheet from said supply-roll therebetween, eccentric means connected with one of said pair of rolls and coacting with said motor, and a manually-operated locking member secured upon said casing and normally in engagement with said eccentric means capable of securing the same in a fixed position.
3. The combination with a casing, a partition formed within said casing near one end thereof, said partition providing a compartment within said casing, a supply-roll secured within said casing, feeding-rolls positioned within said casing, a driving mechanism for said feeding-rolls mounted within the compartment of said casing, said driving mechanism comprising a shaft, a gear-wheel loosely mounted upon said shaft, a spring secured to said shaft and wheel, pawl-and-ratchet means carried by said casing and coacting with said shaft for normally preventing movement thereof in one direction, and manually-controlled locking means positioned within said compartment and coacting with said driving mechanism for controlling movement of said feeding-rolls.

In a mechanism of the class described, the combination with a casing, of a supply-roll journaled in said casing, a partition secured in one end of said casing, apair of feeding-rolls journaled in said casing contiguous to said supply-roll, a driving mechanism for said feed- IIC iug-rolls mounted within said casing between one end thereof and the partition, said driving mechanism comprising a shaft, a gear-wheel mounted upon said shaft, a spring secured to said wheel and shaft, means for retaining said shaft in a fixed position, a pinion secured to one of-said feeding-rolls and meshing with said gear-wheel, a cam connected to said feeding-rolls and pinion, and manually-operated means engaging said cam for normally preventing movement of the same.
5. A device of the character described, comprising a casing, feeding-rolls journaled in said casing, a driving mechanism for said feeding-rolls, comprising a shaft, a pinion secured to said shaft, a pawl secured to 'said casing and normally engagingsaid pinion, a gear-wheel mounted upon said shaft, a coiled spring secured to said shaft near. one end and to the gear-Wheel near its opposite end,'a pinion coacting with said feeding-rolls and meshing With said gear-wheel, eccentric means connected to said pinion, a releaseskey carried by said casing normally engaging said eccentric means for preventing movement of the same.
6. A device of the character described, comprising a support, a feeding mechanism carried by said support, a driving means for said feeding mechanism, said driving mechanism said comprising a shaft journaled in said support, a pinion secured to said shaft, a pawl carried by said support and normally engaging said pinion, a gear-wheel loosely mounted upon said shaft, a spring secured to said shaftaand wheel, a pinion mounted uponsaid support and coacting with said feeding mechanism, said pinion meshing with the gear-wheel, a cam connected to said pinion, and, locking means carried by said support and engaging cam.
7. A device of the character described, comprising a support, a feeding mechanism carried by said support, a driving mechanism positioned upon one side of said support, said driving mechanism comprising a shaft, a Wheel loosely mounted upon said shaft, a coil-spring secured to said shaft a'nd wheel, a pinion carried by said shaft, a pawl carried by said support and engaging said pinion, connecting means for said feeding mechanism and wheel, and locking means coacting with said connecting means.
