, To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD M. ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Arch-File, of which'the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The invention relates to a means of filing loose leaves in book form, so that they may be convenient for observation and removal whenever desired, the device constituting what is commonly known as an arch-file, owing to the em loyment of filing pins or rods of part-circu ar form.

The invention resides in certain special features of construction and arrangement of parts, which will be fully set forth hereinafter and pointed out in the claims.

Reference is had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, in which drawings like characters of reference indicatelike parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the back ofthe file, showing the filing-rods and the device for operating the filing-rod lock. Fig. 2 is a cross-section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, this view showing a number of leaves in place and "illustrating the covers as well-as the back of the file. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the back and part of the covers, this View showing the file in open position. Fig. 4' is a detailed section .on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 5 is a fragmentary view, on a reduced scale, showing one of the leaves with the customary perforations therein.

The back a of the file may be of any desired form and construction. This is true also of the covers b,'which, as here shown, are connected with the side edges of the back by means of flexible fabric sections 0, forming hinges. The back a is formed with a cavity a in its inner side, and fastened to, saidinner side of the back and covering the cavity is a plate a preferably of metal, secured by screws or equivalent fastenings. In order to hold the movable sections (1 of the filing-posts in locked or active position, 'I provide the rock-shaft c, with a disk 9 securely attached to one end. It therefore will appear that by means of this device the leaves may be securely held and readily referred to. By the operation of the push-rod m the leaves may be released at will and adjusted or rearranged to suit the needs of the user. The file is useful in various connections, not only as an account-book of the usual loose-leaf sort, but also as a recordbook, and by making it in various shapes it may be made to serveas a tally and other note book for commercial concerns.

Various changes in the form, proportions, and minor details of my invention may be resorted to at will without departing from the spirit and scope thereof. Hence I consider myself entitiled to all such variations as may lie within the terms of my claims.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A file comprising a back or body, a filing-pin formed of two sections, one of which is fast to the back or body, means for mounting the other section to move from or toward the first section, devices including a dog for holding the second section in engagement with the fixed pin-section, a pin attached to the dog, a swinging member adapted to engage the pin and move the dog into inactive position, and a slide-rod connected with the swinging member to impart movement thereto.

A file comprising a back or body, a filing-pin formed of two sections, one of which is securely attached to the back or body, a rock-shaft on which the other section is mounted, and means for holding the rockshaft with the second section in enga ement with the fixed pin-section and for re easing the same, said means comprising a ratchetdisk attached to the rock-shaft, a spring-dog coacting with the ratchet-disk, a beveled pin attached to the dog, and a swinging member coacting with the pin whereby to permit throwin the dog into inactive position.

A 'le comprising a back or body, a filing-pin formed of two sections, one of which is securely attached to the back or body, a rock-shaft on which the other section is mounted, and means for holding the rockshaft with the second section in enga ement with the fixed pin-section and for releasing the same, said means comprising a ratchet- .disk attached to the rock-shaft, a spring-dog coacting with the ratchet-disk, a beveled pin attached to the dog, a swinging member coacting with the pin whereby to permit throwing the dog into inactive position, and a push-link in connection with the swinging member extending longitudinally along the back or body, to permit the operation of said member.

4. A file comprising a back or body, a liling-pin formed in two sections, one of which is fast to the back or body, means for mounting the other section to move it from or toward the first section, devices including a dog for holding said second section in engage ment with the fixed pin-section, a pin attached to the dog, a member arranged to ride over the pin to move the dog into inactive position, and a means for operating said member.

5. A file comprising a back or body, a liling-pin, means for mounting the same to swing on the back or body, devices including a dog for holding said pin in one position, a pin attached to the dog, a member arranged to ride over the second-named pin to move the dog into inactive position, and means for operating said member.

6. A file comprising a back or body formed of a main part, and a plate fastened rigidly to the inner side thereof, a stationary filingpin section attached to the plate near one side edge thereof, a rock-shaft, bearings attached to the opposite side edge of said, plate, in which bearings the rock-shaft is mounted, the bearings projecting beyond said edge of the plate to carry the rock-shaft in a position beyond the edge, a movable liling-pin section carried by the rock-shaft and coacting with the first named section, a means for locking the rock-shaft to hold the movable filing-pin section in active position, said means including an intermediately-fulcrumed lever mounted on the said plate, a push-rod pivoted to one end of the said lever and having a slot therein, and a pin fitting inv the slot to permit the push-rod limited movement.
