Be it known that we, BENJAMIN 13. Snow and Tunonons'J. DIGKERSON, of Auburn, in the county f Cayuga. and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machinesifor Grinding Reaper- Knives; and he do hereby declare that the following is o folk-clear, end exact description thereofl'referenco being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 represents a. pied or top view of the machine, and

The object of our invention is to provide a. device for grinding respor lsnives upon the face of a stone, with as few changes of position as possible; 5nd to this end our improvements consist, first, in a. sliding rest working in a. slot in the frame for holding the teeth successively in position to be ground second, in pivoting a clamp to the rest in such manner as to regulate the angle at which the-teeth will be ground.

It is desirable the-t reaper-knives should be ground upon the face of the stone, as the operation can be performed more rapidly on the face than on the side', and the fewer changes of position that are made in bringing the different sections against the stone, the more the grinding will be expedited.

In many cutter-bars, a rib or flengo projects upon the under or bevelled side of the sections. This style of cutter-hurconnot be ground upon any side-grinder with'which'we are acquainted, us the ribs come in contact with the stone before the edge of the section. Again, the necessity frequently arises oi grinding out picks or breaks in different parts of the section withouogrinding away the whole face.

Our machine isdosigncd to meet the requirements stated.

In the accompanying drawings, 13 represents the stone, which is turned in hearings in the frame A by the handle '6. A slot, q, of greater length then the diameter of the stone, is made in the frame. A rest, G, is movable in this slot, and 'cnnbe secured in positionby the screw and not a. Arod D, passes through eyes in the rest G, in which it is capable of both longitudinal and rotary motion, and has arms, aid, secured to its ends. A clamp, E, is pivoted to the ends of the arms 0! d, in \vhicirthe reaper-knife, F, to be ground is placed, and held by screws and nuts e e.

The opcrntion of the device is as follows:

The rest 0 is placed at one end of the slot a, as shown in fig. 1, so as to present the knife to be ground in proper position to the face of the stone, and the latter caused to revolve. One edge of each section will be brought successively to the stone by-rnoving the rod D longitudinally in the rest 0, and to grind the opposite edges ottho section, the rest O is movcdalong the slot :2, and secured in a corresponding position at the opposite end of .the stone.

The rod D being capable of oscillating or rotating partially in the rest C, allows the knife F to be held against the stone at any angle to which it may be desired to grind it, and the'sivinging motion of the clhmp E allows any point of a section, or the whole length thereof, to be brought to the stone.

It will be seen that but one change of position of the rest is required in the operation.

What we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The sliding rest 0, moving in a slot in the frame, for the purpose of holding the knife-clamp, substantially as described. i

2. The rod D, moving longitudinally in the rest 0, for the purpose of successively bringing the sections of the reaper-knife to the stone.

3. The combination of the clamp E and'roa D with the rest C, frame A, and fixed stone 13, all arranged and operating substantially as described.
