TQ ALL WHOM IT MAY CON-CERN: t
Be it known that we, GEORGE P. YORK andWlLLrM WILSON, ofiWestfield, in the county of Chautauqua, and State of New York, have Yinvented a new and useful improvement' in Machines for Grinding the Cutters of Blowing-Machines; and Wedo hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact-description thereof, whichwill enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference bcingrhad to Vthe accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, in which- I Figure 1 represents a front elevation of our improved'machine, with a partbroken away. Figure 2 represents' a plan viewof the same. 'i Similar letters of reference indicate, corresponding'parts.
reaping-machines may be readily adjusted and held inadj ustable guides and supports, to be accurately presented to the grinding-wheel, for grinding the same, no vmatteiof what pattern or angle they may be.
To this end our invention consists in the arrangement, upon a'suitable bench, adapted to hold a cuttelybar,
The object ofthisivcntion is to provide a simple andieheap niachirieLwhei-eon the cutter'barsofmowing or' of'a grindstone, provided with mechanism for communicating a lateral motion of the same to and from the cutterhar, and of a table, also provided with means for moving to or from the stone ;A also, in anarrangement ofposts andganges, whereby the cutters are presented to the stone at the proper angle; also, in the combination, with the said posts, of gauges, whereby the proper position of lthe cutter, with relation to 'the stone, is determined; also, in an improvementin the construction of the said posts and gauges.
In the drawings, A represents the frame,'provided with a table, and suitable bearings, for the support of' the shaft C of the stone, D, which isarranged to slide lengthwise thereon. i f i E represents .a-collar,.madefast to the saidshaft, between which, andthe .inner bearing of the shaft, a
suitable spi-ing, E, is arranged to bear against the said collar, tthe tendency of which iste constantly bear the shaft in the direction of the crank'. Y
G represents a loose collar, arranged on the sha-ft,von'the opposite side of the collar E, which is connected, through the bell-crank with the treadle I, whereby the shaft may be moved in the opposite direction. Y v
'The table B may lalso be fixed upon ways, as shown at K, and in like manner connected with a treadle-or any other suitable means for moving it to and fr omthe stone,y and both may be moved together, or either sepa rately, as desired` wm I L and L1 represent posts, secured to the table by bolts L2, in a manner to be adjusted to'or from the side ci' the stone, and axially on the said bolts. Theupper extension of the said posts is suitably in'clined'tewards the face of the stone, and vprovided withwood or soft-metal facings, M, to prevent injury to the edges of the cutters, which are liable to be inadvertently exposed to'contac't with them. p
Near the top of the upright portion of the posts are adjustably xed thereto the gauges M, whicha'e also provided with weed or soft-metal facings M2, which are intended, by action upon the edge of the cutters, toY determine'thelengthwise movement of the cutter-bar. -i
N' and N represent guides, which are also securedradjustably'to the table, which are intendedlto hold the cutter-bar at the proper angle, with refereneetorthc acetot' the stone, to permitthe latter to bear fair upon the bevelled edges of the cutters when in position to be ground, and through which the cutter-bar may slide tobring the'edges ofthe several cutters to the'position to be acted `on by the stone. i l
To grind the cutters of a mowingmachine,'the cutter-bar is placed in the guides N, between the post L and the stone, 'with the'points ofthe cutters upward. Ilheguides N are thenl adjusted to hold the cutter-bar', so that when the cutters stand at aboutthe same angle vertically, as the 'face of the upright part of the post Igiene edge ofthe cutters'will Istand in vertical planes parallel with the grinding-face ofthe stone.v -The post L isthen adjusted to agree with Vthe cutter-lianes clearly shown in fig. 1. Infthis'position 'the cutter-bar is maintained by the hand,4 untih'by the action of the foot lon the treadle, 'the stone is'moved up to the edge of the cutter,` the latterhaving been adjusted-tothe proper position lengthwise-of the bar, as determined by the gauge M1, the
face of which is bevelled, toagree with the edge of the cutters, when the grinding may be proceeded with.v When the` cutter has'been suliiciently ground, and the foot removed from thetreadle, the stone will' be removed from contact with the same, and 'outof the way of the movement of'the cutter-bar, in a lengthwise direction, which. is done to bring the corresponding edge ofthe next cutter into position to be ground, andthe-saine operation may be continued till all the cutters are ground on the, same edge.' The cutter-bar is then 'removed from the guides N N, to those marked N N', whichibeur the same relation tothe stone on the other sideof theaxs, and whereby the other edges of the cutters may, in like manner, be ground, as willA be readily understood. i After the gauges and posts have been adjusted, they do not require to be changed, so long as cutters ofthe same pattern are to be ground. v i
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new, and desire to secure bylietters Patent- 1. The combination, with a table provided with means for holding a cutter-bar, as described, ofv a grindingwheel, arranged to slide laterally, substantially as and for the purpose described. v I I 2. The combination, with the posts L and L?, of the gauges M1, substantially as and for the purpose described. '3. The combination, with cutter-grindingapparatus, of the posts and gauges, provided withthe fucingsotA wood or other soft material, substantially as'and forthe purpose described. y
i 4. The combination, with a grinding-stone provided )vith means for effecting a lateral movement thereof,
-ofthe-guidcsand posts, substantially as and for the purpose described.-
