GRINDING APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 11, 1919.
Application filed April 24, 1918. Serial No. 230,503.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, OELARLEs W. SMrrH- SON and JOSEPH H. sl-IANK, citizens of the United States, residing at Blanchester, in the county of Clinton and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Grinding Apparatus, of which the fol lowing is a specification.
This invention relates to a grinding apparatus which is primarily intended for sharpening the knives of reaping and mow ing machines although the construction of the apparatus is such as to permit the same to be used for sharpening other cutting implements when desired.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a grinding apparatus of this char acter wherein a knife table forming a part thereof is constructed and connected with the apparatus in a novel manner.
Another object of the invention is to provide a knife rest which may be detachably connected with the knife table and employed to prevent the sagging or bending of a mower, or reaper knife while being ground.
A further object of the invention is to provide the apparatus with a grinding tool holder which is mounted for both swinging and sliding movement.
With these and other objects in view the invention resides in the novel combination and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The preferred embodiment of the invention has been illustrated in the accompanying drawings, although no restriction is necessarily made to the precise details of construction therein shown, as changes, alterations, and modifications within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a view in front elevation of a grinding apparatus constructed in accordance with the invention, the grinding tool holder being shown in raised position and the knife table lowered.
Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation of the apparatus and showing the grinding tool engaged with the knife of a mowing machine.
Fig. 3 is a view of a side of the grinding apparatus opposite that disclosed in Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a horizontal section on the line H of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a section through the knife table and one of the clamps thereon.
Like characters of reference denote cor responding parts throughout the several views in the drawings.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, the letter A designates a grinding apparatus constructed in accordance with the invention and including a rectangular shaped plate 10 for connection with a support, such as a wall or the like. Mounted on the plate '10 and extending outwardly therefrom are a pair of spaced and L-shaped brackets 11 between the arms of which are arranged shaft boxings 12. Mounted to turn in the boxings 12 and extending beyond the brackets 11 is a drive shaft 13 having mounted thereon adjacent one of the brackets 11 a belt Pulley 14, whereby the shaft 13 may be driven by a belt associated with any suitable mechanism for imparting rotation to the shaft. Fixed to the shaft 13 adjacent the other bracket 11 is a gear wheel 15.
Mounted to turn and slide on the shaft 13 are, a pair of spaced arms 16 which serve as a support for a tool shaft 17 that extends beyeond the arms 16. The tool shaft 17 which is rotatable and detachably mounted in the arms 16 has fixed thereto a pinion 18 the teeth of which engage the teeth on the gear wheel 15, whereby the shafts 18 and 17 may be simultaneously rotated. Removably mounted on the shaft 17 between the arms 16 is a grinding tool 19 and which in this instance has been shown as an emery wheel having a pair of oppositely inclined peripheral grinding faces.
The shaft 17 and arms 16 serve as a holder for the grinding tool which may be turned and moved sidewise on the shaft 13 to cause the inclined grinding faces on the grinding tool to engage with the cutting edges on the teeth of a mower knife by means of a yoke 20 the arms of which are connected with the arms 16.
A yoke 21 which serves as a table support has the bar 22 which connects the arms 23 of the yoke mounted to turn in the brackets 11 below the shaft 13. Each arm 23 of the yoke has connected therewith a coiled contractile spring 24. which is also connected with an eye 25 adjustably mounted in the plate 10, whereby the tension of the springs 24 which serve to maintain the table support in a horizontal position, may be regulated. Mounted on the plate 10 to extend above one of the arms 23 when the table support 21 is in a horizontal position is an arm 26 in which is adjustably mounted a bolt 27 which is arranged in the path of movement of the table support and serves as an abutment for the said arm 23, thus limiting the movement of the table support toward the shaft 13.
Arranged between the arms 23 of the yoke 21 is a table 28 which includes a rectangular shaped frame 29 and a pair of spaced leaves 30. The frame 29 has the end bars 31 slotted and connected with the arms of the yoke 31 by set screws 32 whereby the table 28 may be raised and lowered within the support 21 to allow a knife connected with the table to be moved toward or away from the grinding tool 19 when the table is in a horizontal position.
Fixed to the leaves of the table 28 are a pair of bars 33 which are offset between their ends, as at 34: and have mounted therein binding screws 35, whereby the bars 33 and screws 35 provide clamps by means of which the knife B of the reaper or mowing machine may be clamped to the table 28 to be acted upon by the grinding tool 19.
Detachably connected with the arms of the table support 21 by bolts 36 is a knife rest 37 which comprises a bar 38 which extends beyond the arms 23 of the table support 21 and has mounted thereon adjacent its ends rollers 39 for contact with a knife when the knife is connected with'the table 28.
F ulcrume'd upon the plate 10 adjacent to its lower end is a lever 40 which is connected by; a link 41 with a crank 42 on the yoke or table support 21, so that the operator of the apparatus by pressing upon the lever 10 may swing the table 28 and knife rest connected therewith in a downward direction against the influence of the springs 24.
When it is desired to employ the apparatus to sharpen a cutting implement other than that of a reaping or mowing machine the tool holder is swung upwardly to the position shown in Fig. 1, in which position the tool holder may be held by engaging the yoke or handle of the tool holder with a latch 43 on the plate 10.
When it is desired to employ the grinding apparatus for sharpening the teeth on a knife of a harvesting machine and the tool holder and table included in the apparatus are in the positions shown in Fig. 1 in the drawings, the knife B is connected with the table by the clamps thereon. The springs 2% are now permitted to swing the knife table upwardly until the table support engages the bolt 27 after which, the tool holder is swung downwardly to its lowered position as shown in Fig.2 in the drawings. The bolt 27 is now adjusted in'the arm 26 until the springs 2 engage the knife with the grinding tool 19. The driving mechanism connected with the shaft 13 is now set in operation to cause the rotation of the tool shaft 17, and by swinging the tool holder toward and away from the plate 10 the cutting edges on the teeth of the knife 13 engaged with the grinding tool may be quickly and satisfao torily sharpened.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. In a grinding apparatus, the combination of upright supporting means, brackets thereon, a shaft journaled in said brackets, vertically swinging arms on said shaft, a tool shaft in said arms, a spur gear on the first-named shaft, a pinion on the tool shaft and intermeshed with said gear, a vertically swinging work support on the supporting means, retractile means suspending said support from the supporting means, a handle connected with the vertically swinging arms, a crank fixed with respect to the work support, a pedal lever, a connection between said crank and lever, and a stop on the supporting means for limiting the upward movement of the work support.

In a grinding apparatus, the combination of upright supporting means, brackets thereon, a shaft journaled in said brackets, vertically swinging arms on said shaft, a tool shaft in said arms, a spur gear on the first named shaft, a pinion on the tool shaft and intermeshed with said gear, a vertically swinging work support pivoted to the supporting means, and retractile means suspending said support from the supporting means. 7
3. In a grinding apparatus, a yoke, a frame arranged to be moved edgewise in said yoke, and having spaced leaves, and clamps on said leaves.

5. In a grinding apparatus, a plate, a table support mounted to'swing in a vertical plane on said plate, eyes adjustably mounted in said plate above said table support, coiled contractile springs connected with said table support and eyes, and a knife table adjustably mounted in said support.
6. In a grinding apparatus, a plate, a table support mounted to swing in a Vertical plane on said plate, eyes adjustably mounted in said plate above said table support, coiled contractile springs connected with said table support and eyes, an arm on said plate, and a bolt adjustably mounted on said arm and arranged in the path of movement of said table support.
7. In a grinding apparatus, a plate, a table support mounted to swing in a vertical plane on said plate, eyes adjustably mounted in said plate above said table support, coiled contractile springs connected With said table support and eyes, and a foot lever fulcrumed upon said plate below said table support and connected therewith.
8. In a grinding apparatus, a yoke having arms, a frame arranged to be raised and lowered between the arms, leaves on said frame, and clamps on said leaves.
