Description

J. B. LYON. FRUIT JAR.
No. 80,554. Patented Aug. 4, 1868.
J. B. LYON. OF EAST GLEVE'LANDQOHIO.
Letters Patent No. 80,554, dated August 4. 1868.
IMPROVED FRUIT-JAB,
fiilgr Srlgehfile rzfzmt t is i m Ether; fittest are making 9rd at flge trim.
TO' ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it kno'wntbat' I, .113. LYON, of East Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoge, and in the State of Ohio,
have invented certain new a nd useffil Improvements in the Modeof Preserving Fruit; and Ida hereby declare,
'that the follovving is a full and complete description of the some, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, makinga'part of this-specification, in which- 1 Figure 1 is a; perspective view of thejar Figure 2 is detached. section.
Lik'e letterslof reference refer to like parts in the views.
Ii: fig. 1,- A represents a fruit jar, which may be constructed of glass or other material, and 'of'any desirable shape and size. B, ,the top or cover of said jar, consists of :a metallic cap, the band or flange of which is provided with a screw, a, whereby it is screwed to the neck of the'jar. G is agasket, of rubber or other airimpervions material, placed upon the shoulder of thejar, and down upon whichthe cap is screwed, and thereby the jar made air-tight Dis 1:. valve-seat, in whih is located the valve E, fig. 2-,which is simply a metallic disk'o-rbutton, interposed-between which and the seat is'a soft bed, F, of rubber or other suitable material, down "upon which the valve is forced by the ftubeG; said tube being screwed into the seat down upon the margin efth'evalve, thereby making anair-tig'ht joint".
Forfiir.thei='security,an elastic band, H,.fig; 2 isplaced on around the lower end of the tube, so' thston w1 ..d.o wnLthe said tube, the. band will .be compressed between the upper edge of the-.valve-seat and collar c. -By this-sienna 'the .air, is effectuallyprevented'frcin na'ssingintothe jar around the screw, this, in an easy; simplenlan'ner making the jail securelyttight. F"
:Thc iractical manipulation of this device is as followmvlz r The fruit or other articles for preservation being'placed in: the jar, the cap B is then carefully and tightlylscreired down-upon thev shoulder and 'ga'sket' referred to 'This being properly done, the airis then. eii'hausted fro'ni the far by an-a ir-pump, to which it isconnected byon elastic or other tube. 3 The air. being wholly exhausted, the tiibelis then screwed down upon the valve and packing, above described, thereby ex cluding tbcair fromthe jar, and thus secdringrheva'cu'um in which thcfruit is leftfor preservation.
elastic band H, andcover B, for the pnrpose substantiallyas set forth.
'It is oitten fourid that. a certain quantity. of air \vill'escape'fromthefruit or other articles into the jar; after-the aijrjs exhausted from thejar. Ia'order to remove 'this,"should it be found necessary, the pump is again applied to'the .jar. Thej -tube is then jslightly loosened, which will also loosen the valve, and the air drawn out through the notches a, int-he end of t'he tube. I
The external air being prevented :from' passingin eround the tnbeand valve-seafl-by the ela'stie band'H,
which, as amn sia,- is comnressed-betweenthe edge oftbe'seatand collar'c, hence is certainly k novvn that no air is-d rawn bythe'pump from the outside, as noairz can find its way in'b etween the tube and valve-seat.
If the end ofz the tube were without the notehesrefe'rrcd to, the valve, whe'n"iu contact with the.same,=
wouldi'fit so closely as to stop the air frompnssing into the tube, and. thereby prevent the exhausting of the alr-from tbe jar; hence the necessity ofbaving the holesi'n the ,side of the tube,-as .shoivn inthedrawingQ What claim as my improvement, and desire to'secure by Letters Patent," isev The screw-tube G, rirovide'd with notches a, as arranged, in corribinationvrithf the valve-seatD, valve E,
J. B. Lyon.
