ARIVIATURE FOR ELECTRICAL MACHINES.
Specification of Letters Fatent.
Patented Nov. 28, 1905.
Application filed March 25, 1905. Serial No. 252,057.
To all whont it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM T. HENSLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boundbrook, in the county of Somerset and State of New Jersey. have invented new and useful Improvements in Armatures for Electrical Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to armatures for electrical machines; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction thereof, as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
The principal object of the invention is to afford a satisfactory means of ventilating the armature-core.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, as follows:
Figure 1 shows a section on the line 1 1 in Figs. 2 and 4:; Fig. 2, a plan view of a segment of the armature; Fig. 3, a plan view of one of the spacing-pieces used in the construction of the armature, the same being enlarged; Fig. I, a section on the line i t in Fig. 1.
The armature comprises the laminae or disks A. These disks are formed with the teeth a in their periphery, and the armature-coils D are arranged in the spaces between these teeth. This is a common construction.
Heretofore spaces have been provided for ventilating purposes by separating two of the disks sufficiently to make an air-space. Different means have been employed for holding the disks adjacent to the air-spaces apart. In most of them the spacing devices are such as to interfere with the free flow of air or lack efficiency in some other respect.
I accomplish the holding of the disks apart by a spacing-piece G, which is laid on the armature-coil and spans the air-space E. It is provided with the shoulders 0, which engage the adjacent teeth a. The spacing-piece is preferably formed of fiber or some other nonconducti'ng material and is held in position by the band-wires D.
It will he noted that the air-spaces e between the coils B are unobstructed. The width of the shoulders 0 is preferably such that the available air-space between the pieces U is equal to the available air-spaces between the edges of the armature-coils toward the center.
hat I claim as new is- 1. In an armature, the combination of the armature-disks having teeth between which the armature-coils are arranged; said coils; and the spacing-pieces arranged along the coils and having shoulders engaging the teeth, the shoulders being of less width than the width of the teeth on the disk and forming ventilatingspaces between said spacing-pieces.
2. In an armature, the combination of the armature-disks having teeth between which the armature-coils are arranged; said coils; and the spacing-pieces arranged along the coils and having shoulders engaging the teeth, the shoulders being of less width than the width of the teeth on the disk and forming ventilatingspaces between said spacing-pieces equal to the spaces between the inner edges of the armature-coils.
3. In an armature, the combination of the armature-disks having teeth between which the armature-coils are arranged; said coils; and the spacing-pieces arranged along the coils and having shoulders engaging the teeth, the shoulders being of less width than the width of the teeth on the disk and forming ventilatingspaces between said spacing-pieces; and the wrapping D extending around the armature and securing the spacing-pieces in place.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
\VILLIAM T. I-IENSLEY.
