UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM F. BUOKLEY, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
ARMATURE FOR DYNAMO-ELECTRIC MACHINES.
SPECIFICATIQN'forming part of Letters Patent No. 315,903, dated April 14, 1885.
Application filed June 28, 1884.
T 0 6b whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WM. F. BUoKLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dynamo-Machines; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention has relation to an improved construction of the rotating armature of a dynamo-machine, which armature is intended to be adapted to any dynamo of ordinary construction.
The object of the invention is to so make and put together the sections of the armature that any of the former may be easily removed from the latter, taken apart, repaired, and re placed without interfering with the other sections. A further object is to so construct each section that air may be admitted between the plates of which it is composed, and prevent its overheating when in operation.
Figure l is a representation of a side view of my device. Fig. 2 is alongitudinal central sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a view of one of the sections of the armature removed from the disk. Figs. 4, 5, and 6 are detail views of the armature-sections, and Fig. 7 is a perspective view of one of the bobbins.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the disk of an armature, made of brass or other proper metal or substance, and secured on the rotating armature-shaft of the dynamo in the usual manner by means of the central opening, a, and the set-screws a a. The disk has on its circumference the radial arms a a, equidistant from each other, and usually eight in number, but more or less may be used, as deemed requisite.
B B are similar plates, of iron, made on the segment of a circle, and about one-sixteenth of an inch in thickness, and b b are clips, of iron, of the same thickness as the plates B, but of triangular shape. The plates and clips (No model.)
of each section are dipped into shellac or asphaltum varnish to insulate them each from each, and are then connected together, so as to form one of the sections B, by thelong rivets b b, as shown, the plates and clips alternating, and there being one of the latter at each sideof the section. The clips I) I) lie at right angles and centrally across the plates B, and two rivets, b b, pass through them where they cross each other. Two plates, 1) I), of each section are longer than the rest, the extended ends of one lying on the outer sides of two adjacent arms, a 66-, between which the section is situated, and the ends of the other plate If lying against the outer surfaces of said arms, the said extended ends being secured to the arms by the screws 1) b Two adjoining sections may be secured to the arms by the same screws,b b", by having the extended ends of the plate I) of one section overlap those of the other. This is the preferable construction.
0 O are bobbins for the armature, two of which jut over the ends of the plates B of each section, and are separated by the clips b b. Each bobbin 0 is composed of the insulated copper wire-c, wrapped between and having the same contour as the outer insulating-plates, c 0, made preferably of vulcanized rubber.
c c are the terminals of each bobbin, which are connected together as in any other dynamo of the Gramme class to which this belongs. The side of each bobbin adjacent to an arm a does not lie closely against the same, but there is sufficient space between the two for the air to readily enter and pass from the spaces D D between the plates B B, so as to keep the armature cool. 1
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. In a rotating armature for a dynamo-machine, the combination of the disk A, provided with the arms a a, and the plates B B, and clips I) Z), )roperly insulated and arranged in sets forming the sections B B, between the arms a a of the bobbins O O, composed of the insulating-plates 0 c, and insulated wire 0, properly wrapped, between said plates, substantially as specified.
2. In a dynam0-n1achine substantially as In testimony whereof I affix my signature in described, the combination of the disk having presence of two witnesses. the radial arms, the armature-sections composed of the plates and clips, the long plates BUCKLEY' 5 b and the screws If, for connecting the ex- Witnesses:
tended ends of the said plates to the radial L. A. RUssELL,
arms, substantially as set forth. 7M. L. RICE.
