PATENTED NOV. 28, 1905.

WIRE STRETOHER.
APPLICATION FILED mum, 1905.
/Vitnmu UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WlRE-STRETCHER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 28, 1905.
Application filed March 20,1905. Serial No. 251,133.
To all whom itmay concern.-
Be it known that I, J on LAMBERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Catherine, in the county of Wilcox and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire-Stretchers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention provides an improved construction of wire-stretcher of that type embodying, primarily, a lever having a wire-engaging claw or member applied thereto.
The essential feature of the invention resides in the provision of a device of the above type having the utmost simplicity in construction and therefore adapted to be manufactured ata comparatively small cost, at the same time being of maximum s'ubstantiality.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings.
While the invention may be adapted to different forms and conditions by changes in the structure and minor details without departing from the essential features thereof, still the preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertital longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the claw alone.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the Views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
In the drawings the numeral 1 designates the lever and the numeral 2 the claw or wireengaging member. The member 2 is secured to the lever, which latter is preferably made of wood or like material to increase the cheapness of the device, ata point between the ends of said lever. This claw or engaging member 2 comprises a body preferably consisting of a plate having a longitudinally-extending V- shaped slot 3, forming a jaw 4, between which and the body of the member is received the wire in the practical operation of the device. The body 2 is arranged lengthwise of the lever and is provided at opposite ends with lateral extensions 5, adapted to pass through openings 6 in the lever. The extensions 5 form means for attaching the claw or member 2 to the lever, the outer extremities of said extensions being bent laterally, so as to prevent displacement thereof from the openings in the lever, affording a very rigid and firm connection with the operating member 1.
The construction of the device is such that the members 2 may be quickly applied to the levers 1 in the making of the invention, and when once secured to the levers these members 2 are not likely to be disengaged or broken under most severe conditions of service. The lever 1 may be reduced at one end so as to from a handle portion, the opposite end being provided with a point 7 which may engage a post or other suitable object when using the lever in applying the strain to the wireto stretch the latter.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is In a wire-stretcher, the combination of the lever 1 provided at one end with the point 7 the claw or joint-engaging member 2 comprising a plate or body formed longitudinally thereof with the V-shaped slot 3, the lever 1 having spaced openings therein, and the extensions 5 projected from the claw 2 at its 0pposite extremities and passing through the openings in the lever, the outer ends of the extensions aforesaid being bent laterally to WINNIE B. LEE, CAssin OAINE.
