SHUTTER PASTENER.

FIG- 1.
FIGJ.
a m a UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. ABRAHAM B. LANmsTdr WAYNEsBoRo, PENNSYLVANIA,
SHUTTER-FASTENERA Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 21, 1905,
Application filed October 18, 1904;. Serial No. 229,039:
To all whom, it may concern: I
Be it known that 1, ABRAHAM B. LANDIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Waynesboro, in the county of Franklin and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shutter-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my said invention isto provide a shutter-fastener which will be com paratively inexpensive to manufacture and attach, being made from castings without any machine-work whatever, and one which will not interfere with the use of an outside windowscreen, leaving the window-sill entirely free and unobstructed, all as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, the same being an improvement on my shutter-fastener patent dated September 27, 1904:, the general features in this case being practically the same with the following exceptions: In my above-named patent I employ a catch having two oppositely-disposed trunnions engaging two notches on the rear of a housing, said catch being retained in said notches by the shutter itself, having a plate between said housing and shutter-surface to take the inward thrust of said catch and to prevent the same from wearing into-the shutter. The object of this invention is to dispose of said plate and take the inward thrust of said catch against the housing itself by means peculiar to its construction and avoiding any machinework in its manufacture.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part hereof, and on which similar reference characters indicate similar parts, Figure 1 is a plan view of a housing having a catch mounted in the lower crossbar of the shutter-frame; Fig. 2, a transverse section through the windowsill and shutter, said shutter being shown in closed position and fastened with my improved fastener, which. also shows a transverse section of said housing on dotted lines 5 5 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a face or plan view of a part embodying the keeper mounted in the outside edge of the upper window-sill.
In said drawings, A represents the frame or housing of the keeper with a cross-bar a, being secured by screws a a; B, the frame or housing in which the catch C is mounted.
side of the window-frame and adapted to close against the outside edge of the sill 2. The housing or keeper A is substantially the same as that shown in Letters Patent referred to granted to me, although any suitable form of keeper can be used. The frame or housing B is circular in form'and is inserted in a single bored aperture in the shutter-frame to a depth to have said housing to come flush therewith and is secured by screws 5 b engaging the edge of same. Said housing is of sufficient diameter to permit the insertion of the fingers beneath the front plate or flange 6 which forms a pull by which the shutter can be closed from the inside, being substantially the same as shown in the patent before referred to.
The catch C, which constitutes the improvement proper over my above-referred-to patent, is formed with a hook 0 which hooks over the rear or inside edge of the cross-bar 6, formed in the lower part of the housing B, said catch having a shoulder 0 which contacts with the forward or outside edge of the cross-bar Z) and which takes the backward thrust of the catch when same is being engaged with the keeper A in the window-sill when closing the shutter. It will be seen that the catch 0 cannot be disengaged from the crossbar o of the housing when said housing is in place in the shutter, the point 0 coming in contact with the shutter preventing the disengagement of said shoulder c from the crossbar 6. This form of catch prevents the wearing of a depression in the shutter-surface by frequent use, which would cause said catch to get end motion, preventing the catch from engaging the keeper, as would be the case with my former patent without the plate shown, the object of this invention being to make as few parts as possible and to make the parts self-retaining when in position without any machine-work, so that when parts are cast they can be assembled into simple openings in the shutter and window-sill.
Having thus described my said invention, What I claim as new, and desire to cover by Letters Patent, is
In a shutter-fastener, a keeper secured to the Window-sill, a housing inserted in the face of the shutter, a catch to engage said keeper, a hook on said catch to engage a cross-bar of said housing on the rear edge and a shoulder on said catch engaging the said cross-bar on its front edge, substantially as and for the pur- I pose specified.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand, at \Naynesboro, Pennsylvania, this 17th day of October, 1904:.
ABRAHAM B. LANDIS.
