Description

No. 804,838. PATENTED NOV. 21, 1905.
' 0. GARRISON.
WRENCH.
APPLICATION FILED APR,4. 1905.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. CLAUDE GARRISON, on BELLAIRE, OHIO.
WRENCH- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 21, 1905.
Application filed. April 4, 1905. Serial No. 253,766.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LCLAUDE GARRIsoN,a citizen of the United States ofAmerica, andaresi dent of Bellaire, county of Belmont, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in wrenches, and more particularly to an improved monkey-wrench; and it consists in the particular construction, arrangement, and combination of parts which will hereinafter be fully described.
The object of the invention is to provide a sliding-jaw wrench with means whereby the movable jaw thereof may be quickly adjusted to any desired position.
In describing theinvention in detail reference is herein had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in
which Figure 1 is an elevation of a wrench embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same on the line 2 2, Fig. 1, showing the threads of the sleeve in engagement with the rack. Fig. 3 is a similar section showing said threads out of engagement with said rack; and Fig. 4 is an end view of the sleeve, showing but one stop-shoulder.
Referring to said drawings,in which like reference-numerals designate like parts throughout the several views, 1 indicates the handle, 2 the fixed jaw, and 3 the shank,of the wrench, said shank having its edges formed into toothed racks 4, as shown. Mounted to slide upon said shank 3 and to cooperate with the fixed jaw 2 is a slidable jaw 5, having a rearward extension 6, carrying a lug 7, which engages and travels in an annular groove in the front end of a sleeve 9. All of said parts excepting the sleeve 9 are of the usual or ordinary' construction.
The sleeve 9 is interiorly threaded, so as to engage the teeth 10 of the shank 3. A portion of the threads 11 of said sleeve 9 are, however, cut away on directly opposite sides for the entire length of the sleeve, making two diametrically opposite longitudinal grooves 12. Now when said grooves are brought into alinement with the racks or toothed edges of the shank said sleeve and the movable jaw with which said sleeve is connected, as above mentioned, are free to be quickly adjusted to any desired position. The said movable jaw having been moved to the desired position, the sleeve is turned to bring the threads 11 thereof into engagement with the teeth 10, when the jaw is firmly locked against longitudinal movement. Provided in one or both sides of said sleeve is a pin or stop-shoulder 13, the purpose of which is to limit the turning movement of the sleeve and to admit of the accurate alinement of the grooves with the racks without inspection, also to prevent the sleeve from being turned too far when the threads are moved into engagement with the teeth.
As is apparent, but one stop-shoulder 13 need be employed, as shown in Fig. 4, as one will serve the purpose as well as two or more. Said stop-shoulder may be of any desired form or construction, but is preferably in the form of a screw which is projected through the side of the sleeve from the outer side thereof at the front edge of the groove.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a wrench, the cornbination with a longitudinal shank having toothed racks on its edges and carrying a fixed jaw, and a movable jaw slidable on said shank, of an interiorly-threaded sleeve mounted upon said shank in engagement with said racks, said sleeve having an annular channel in which a lug carried by said movable jaw is adapted to travel while said sleeve and jaw remain in fixed relation thereto as to position, longitudinal diametrically opposite grooves formed in said sleeve by cutting away the threads on opposite sides of the interior thereof, and pins projected through the walls of said sleeve into the interior thereof to limit the turning movement thereof, substantially as described.
Signed by me in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
, CLAUDE GARRISON.
