Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 14, 1905.
Application filed July 22,1905. Serial No. 270,791.
To mil whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EBENEZER SATCHWELL, manufacturing jeweler, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at 36 Vyse street, in the city of Birmingham. England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bracelets, Necklets, and Like Ornaments for Personal \V ear, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to distensible, adjustable, or expansible bracelets, bangles, wristlets, necklets, guards, ornamental waistbelts, ornamental collars, and articles of jewelry or ornaments for personal wear, and has particular reference to such jewelry and articles as are made wholly or principally from chain or link work; but the invention is also applicable to bangles, wristlets, and the like which are made wholly or principally from flexible bands or flexible parts.
One of the principal objects of the said invention is to provide a novel and improved construction of distensible or adjustable article of jewelry or ornament which is capable of being easily extended or enlarged or contracted in size to fit or suit varying-sized wrists, necks, waists, or the like or of being temporarily enlarged or expanded to facilitate the putting on or taking off of the article, while another object is to provide such articles with a simple and efiicient fastening or connector.
Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings represents an expanding or adjustable chain bangle or bracelet constructed and provided with a fastening in accordance with one form of my invention. Fig. 2 is another view showing the fastening or connector in plan. Fig. 3 shows the fastening arrangements in longitudinal section. Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical section of Fig. 2 upon the dotted line :0. Fig. 5 is a side elevation, and Fig. 6 a top side plan, of the body part of the connector or fastening separately.
The same letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in said figures.
In the particular construction of extensible or expansible and adjustable bangle represented in the said figures the principal or body part of the same consists of a length of curbchain or other link work a, whose one end a is connected or fixed to the closed end 6 of a box-like casing or sleeve Z), constituting the body of the connector or fastening device 6, which carries or is attached to a circular case or locket, such as c, or a padlock heart-shaped or other locket miniature-holder frame or case of an ornamental pattern, shape, or design may be substituted. The opposite end b of the sleeve or tubular body 5 is open, and a gap or clearance I)" is cut at about the middle of its top side, and an auxiliary connector in the form of a length of light chain (,Z is directed through the gap 6* along the inside of the sleeve (which serves as a guide for said chain as well as providing for the fastening of same) and out by way of the open end 0, and the one extremity d is linked up to the free extremity a of the bracelet or bangle chain (.1, while the other termination (Z is fitted with a ball or other stop a of larger size than the aperture 6* for the purpose of preventing the chain (which is capable of running freely to and fro through a part of the said sleeve) from becoming entirely detached or disconnected.
By connecting the end of the bracelet or bangle to the fastening arrangement through the medium of a running length ofchain, such as (Z, the bangle may be readily adjusted to suit wrists of varying sizes, or it may be expanded, distended, or opened out to such a size as will admit of it passing freely over the hand when being put on or taken off and of being closed again to the proper size when in position, and, further, the bracelet or bangle is fastened in its contracted or adjusted position by engaging one of its links with the sleeve, as hereinafter described, to which it is positively locked through the medium of a catch or fastening carried by the said sleeve and adapted to prevent the said link of the running-chain from rising out of its engaging position. To facilitate the fastening or engagement of the chain to the sleeve or casing b, the former is preferably of the pattern commonly known as trace-chain and consists of a series of elongated links joined up at right angles alternately, and when such chain is used a cross slot, notch, or gap 11'' is formed in one side of the central opening 6" with which one of the links is engaged edgewise after the bangle is adjusted. This connection between the chain and the sleeve is rendered positive and safe, so as to secure the contracted bangle while being worn by a lever fastener or catch f, which is pivoted to the top of the sleeve 6 rearward of the said openingb and is provided with a lump or projection f, adapted when the catch is shut down to pass through the opening I) and bear upon that link of the running-chain which is coupled to the link that engages the notch [2 and thus prevents the said link from rising out of its fastening engagement with the said notch.
Instead of employing a hinged or shut-down section and elevation the application of a fastening-slide g, which is mounted upon and capable of movement along the top of the sleeve or tubular body 6 and is adapted to cover and uncover the central opening 6 wherethrough the chain (Z runs, and when in the last-named position, which is represented in Fig. 7, it holds down the said chain and retains one of its links inlocking engagement with the side gap Z2 and thus prevents the said chain from shifting from its adjusted position until the said slide has been drawn clear of the said opening and notch, as shown in Fig. 8, when the said chain can then be at once disengaged and is free to run through the sleeve in either direction and to any extent, limited only by its length, as may be required.
In some cases the supplementary catch or means for retaining the link of the running chain or connector in its edgewise engagement with the fastening-notch may be dispensed With, or it may be held in such engagement by a weight at the free hanging end of the said chain. Further, instead of forming the fastening-notch in the edge of the tubular guide or sleeve through which the chain passes such tubular part or sleeve may be dispensed with, and I may secure to the fixed end of the bangle or principal chain any other convenient form of attachment or fitting having a suitable notch to receive one of the links of the supplementary chain or connection, which said attachment may or may not be provided with a catch-slide or equivalent means for preventing the said link from rising out of its edgewise engagement with the notch.
Instead of forming the principal or body part of the bangle from chain or link work it may consist of a length of curved springmetal banding, which is secured at one end to the notched fastening attachment and at the other end to the running chain or connector.
The application of the invention to necklets, collars, waist-belts, and other ornamental articles to be worn around various parts of the person diflers in no essential respect from its application to a chain bangle or bracelet as herein described.
Having fully described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent 1. A device of the character described, consisting of a flexible body portion, a sleeve attached at one end to said body portion and provided intermediate its ends with a notch, and a connecting element attached to the other end of the body portion and adapted to extend in said sleeve and engage in the notch.
2. A device of the character described, consisting of a flexible body portion, a fastening element' attached at one end to said body portion and provided intermediate its ends with a notch, a connecting element attached to the other end of the body portion and adapted to engage in the notch of said fastening element,
and means adapted to extend over said notch for preventing the separation of the connecting element from'said fastening element. I
3. A device of the character described, comprising a flexible body portion, a fastening element attached to one end of said body portion and provided intermediate its ends with a notch, a connecting element attached at one end to the other end of the body portion and extending through said fastening element and engaging in said notch, and means adapted to extend over said notch and to prevent the separation of said connecting element with said fastening element.
4:- A device of the character described, consisting of a flexible body portion, a fastening element attached at one end to said body portion and provided intermediate its ends with a notch, a connecting element attached to the other end of the body portion and adapted to engage in the notch of said fastening element,
and a shiftable means connected with said fasteningelement and adapted to extend over said notch for preventing the separation of the connecting element from said fastening element.
5. A device of the character described consisting of a flexible body portion, a fastening element attached at one end to said body portion and provided intermediate its ends with a notch, a connecting element attached to the other end of the body portion and adapted to extend through said fastening element and engage in the said notch, and a retaining device pivoted to said fastening element and provided with a protuberance adapted to engage in said notch to prevent the separation of said connecting element from said fastening element.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing wit- HQSSGS.
