Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 14, 1905.
Application filed October 3, 1904. Serial No. 226,971.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CYRIL E. FowBLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore city, State of Maryland, have invented new and useful Improvements in Book Holders or Rests, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to improvements in book holders or rests designed to be used in connection with a chair, whereby the occupant of the chair can rest his book .and shift the same to different positions, all
as will be hereinafter described, and particu larly pointed out in the appended claim.
The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate my invention, in which Figure 1 represents a side view of a chair, showing my improved holder attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view of the same. F ig. 3 is a plan view of the clamps. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the clamps. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the other clamp, and Fig. 6 is a detail plan view of the supporting-brackets for the book-rest.
Referrin by letter to the accompanying drawings, designates an ordinary chair, to the arm of which my improved book rest or holder is attached.
B represents the holder or rest for a book, the same being secured by screws a to a casting 6, having an opening to admit the vertical screw-threaded end a on a crank or bent rod d, said end being provided with a nut e, by which the casting is secured to the bent rod. This rod is bent into a horizontal por tion and again downward into a vertical portion g, which latter passes vertically through an opening it in a projection 'i on one of the clamp-sections y', and the same is provided with male screw-threads 7c, that engage female screw-threads in said projection. This section 7' comprises a top horizontal plate Z and a vertical plate m, having slots n, and the same is provided with a corrugated inner face, as at 0, and the section 19 of the clamp is also provided on its vertical outer face 12 with corrugations r and a horizontal plate .9, having a binding-screw t. Female screw-threaded openings at are formed in the vertlcal plate v to receive clamping-screws to,
which pass through the slots in the clampsection 9', whereby the two sections are firmly secured to one another. The adjustment of the clamp-sections to one another is designed to allow the clamp to be adjusted to the different thicknesses of the arm of a chair and held firmly by the two thumbscrews aforesaid. At the same time the clamp, with its book-rest, is securely held to the arm of the chair by the upper horizontal plate and the thumb-screw in the lower horizontal plate.
It will be readily seen from the above description, when taken in connection with the annexed. drawings, that my device can be readily clamped to a chair and by means of the cranked rod the book-rest can. be raised or lowered to 'suit the convenience of the occupant of the chair and at the same time the holder can be adjusted to a position. directly in front or to the side and the parts are so constructed that the device can be readily detached from the chair, taken apart to facilitate shipping the same in compact form, and a device as herein described is durable, easily adjusted, ornamental, and at the same time cheap to manufacture.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with a clamp adapted to to be secured to an arm of a chair or other like support, said clamp comprisingaws having integral right-angularly-disposed flanges or plates transversely corrugated on their meeting faces, the flange or plate on one jaw having an integral longitudinally-perforated projection and a slot on each side of said proj ection, and screws adapted to pass through said slots and engage openings in the plate of the other jaw, of a rod bent at a right angle near each end, one end of said rod being adapted to be secured in the projection on the clamp, and a book-rest revolubly mounted on the other end of said rod.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CYRIL E. FOVVBLE.
