UNITED STATES PATENT. OFFICE,

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. '7, 1905.
Application filed. March 30,1905. Serialv No. 252,909.
To all whom, it may concern:
, nure-spreaders, clover-hullers, corn-shred- 'ders, threshing-machines, and all kinds of vehicles where a tongue maybe used and where it is desired sometimes to attach a single team and at other times three horses walking abreast.
The invention has among its objects to simplify and improve the construction and operation of this class of devices; and with these and other ends in view, which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of embodiment of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that the right is reserved to any changes. alterations, and modifications to which recourse may be had within the scope of the invention and without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the efliciency of the same.
In said drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the improved draft attachment arranged for three horses walking abreast. Fig. 2 is a top plan view showing the attachment arranged for a single team. Fig. 3 is a sectional detail view taken on the line 3 3 in Fig. 1.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are indicated throughout by similar characters of reference.
The frame or body of this improved draft attachment may be described as including a pair of longitudinal parallel boxes 1 1, each composed of a pair of plates or side members 2. 2, suitably spaced apart, the upper and lower sides of said box members being open for the greater portion of their lengths. The box members 1 and 1 are connected and spaced apart by means of spacing-bars 3 3, placed against the upper and lower edges of the side members of said boxes at and near the front and rear ends of the latter. Adjacent the side members of the boxes are placed cheek-plates 4L 4:, having bosses 5, which are perforated for the passage of connecting-bolts 6, whereby the frame members are connected securely and durably in such a manner as not to be liable to be drawn or sprung out of shape. The side members which constitute the box 1 are extended rearwardly, as shown at 7, for the reception of a stub-tongue 8, which is intended to be permanently connected with the implement to which the device of the present invention is to be applied. One of the extension members 7 is connected with one of the side members of the box 1 by means of an obliquely-disposed brace 9.
The boxes 1 l are provided directly in front of the rear cross-brace 3 with top plates 10 10, the latter of which has a perforation 11 for the reception of a bolt 12, by means of which a tongue 13 may be secured in said boxing 1 The top plate 10 has connected therewith a hammer-strap 14, the bolt of which 15 serves for the attachment of the tongue 13 when the latter is used for center draft, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
It will be understood that the stub-tongue 8 defines the longitudinal center of the draft and that when the tongue 13 is mounted in the box 1*, as in Fig. 1 of the drawings, it is out of alinement with the stub-tongue 8. \Vhen the device is thus used, a tripletree 16 is mounted upon the hammer-bolt 15, said tripletree carrying at one end a doubletree l7, having whifiietrees 18, one at each side of the tongue 13. The opposite end of the tripletree carries a swingletree 19. L
It will be seen that this device constitutes an ordinary draft-evener whereby the central horse is permitted to walk at one side of the tongue. When a single team is to be used, the tongue 13 will be adjusted in the box 1 in alinement with the stub-tongue 8 and an ordinary doubletree, as 20, will be used for the attachment of the draft.
This improved draft attachment is extremely simple in construction and may be readily applied to various agricultural implements as well as to vehicles of all kinds. The
construction is simple and inexpensive, and the change from two to three draft-animals may be very easily and quickly effected.
While in the accompanying drawings a construction has been shown whereby the main tongue may be applied to the right of the stubtongue, it is evident that within the scope of the invention a left-hand device embodying all the features of the invention may be constructed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is- 1. In a device of the class described, a pair of parallel boxes each composed of a pair of side members, cross-bars engaging the upper and lower edges of the box members near the front and rear ends of the latter, cheek-plates abutting upon the side members of the boxes between the cross-bars and having perforated bosses alining with perforations in the crossbars, and connecting-bolts.
2. In a device of the class described, two
